New Episode! The crew of the Endeavour no longer have a reason to remain in the Society Islands. As such, they need to decide where their voyage will take them next. To do this, Cook pulls out his secret, sealed orders from the Admiralty and cracks them open. historyaotearoa.com/2025/10/12/1...

My vindication is that this guy, who was Banks' contemporary, also says he fucking sucked which makes me love this meme even more.

I've now started my reading on Cook's second voyage and as much as I like to keep my bias to a minimum I think I did a pretty bad job of hiding my disdain for Banks.

Well, apparently he has one last blow up before we can get rid of him so I'll get to drag him through the mud just a little bit more.

I've now mostly finished all of the work on Cook's first voyage with all except one Patreon episode recorded and scheduled for release. The wheel never stops turning though so tonight might be the when I start researching expedition number 2! Exciting!

One good thing about the local elections is finally getting a definitive list of how racist all the different bits of New Zealand are.

Maori scholar, Makereti Papakura writing at her desk c.1910. The room is decorated with a mix of Maori & European mementoes whilst the rafters are painted with traditional kowhaiwhai patterns. Makereti will be awarded a posthumous degree in Oxford tomorrow, almost a century after she died in 1930.

While doing some research for work I found this incredible 1886 aerial view of Auckland in the Auckland Libraries Heritage collection!

It's zoomable in high detail on the website — kura.aucklandlibraries.govt.nz/digital/coll...
Hand drawn and coloured pictorial map of Auckland City in 1886 representing a view from 1000 feet up.

I am on the Forest and Bird mailing list, this was the graphic of the front runners after 5 days of #BOTY voting. But there is still a lot of voting time so it is anybird's game. #birdOfTheYear

It’s not quite national telly but Ben also came onto HANZ to speak about pekapeka, probably my personal favoured BOTY episode! Give it a listen if you haven’t already! historyaotearoa.com/2021/10/23/7...

BRING THE BAT BACK YOU COWARDS

Even in 2025, our precious pekapeka still gets a mention for winning the Bird of the Year competition. Was it all worth it? You bet!

All the best to this year’s campaigners—may the best (actual) bird win!

A rain cape made from leaves of tikumu, the mountain daisy. Tikumu was called 'the leather plant' by Pākehā settlers in the 1800s because of the suede-like texture of its leaves.
This specimen is in Britain’s Royal Botanic Gardens.
Outside of cloak. More than 1,500 tikumu leaves are estimated to have been used. Harvesting and preparing the leaves would have taken a huge collective effort. The weaver had to scrape away the outer layers and remove the woody midrib, leaving the soft, pliable, water-resistant, underside of the leaf.

The weaver used tikumu leaves in two ways to create the cloak. She wove the foundation from a combination of muka (flax fibre) and tikumu leaves – the whenu (warp, or vertical threads) are alternately muka and tikumu. She then covered the surface with long strips made from tikumu leaves, which channel off the rain very effectively. Inside of cloak. Wear patterns suggest it was worn on the left shoulder.
