> Trump suggests something catastrophically stupid
> everyone panics
> market dips a tiny bit
> motivated by the market panic, Trump rolls it back something stupider but less catastrophic
> Nothing eventually happens

Repeat twice per day, every day, until Jan 2029.
One of the funnier things is when Great Books Curriculum supporters try to put together anything remotely technical and they’re suggesting stuff from the 1700’s that’s just straight up wrong and/or underbaked. Like, Adam Smith will not teach you modern economics, sorry.

In science, you have the null hypothesis, that you need to prove to a high probability isn’t true.

I think there should be a similar theory of buying cars, where you need to prove to a very high degree that you actually wouldn’t be better off with a Japanese compact hatchback buying any other car

Epstein survivor Jena-Lisa Jones: "Trump really ran his campaign on this. This is why I voted for him. The release of these files has been so important for me for so long that when he run on that, I really had some hope that someone would do something about it."

Is there any consensus at what distance it makes sense to build HSR to a 350 km/h standard rather than a 300 km/h one?

National level IQ estimates are funny just because they portray Japan as this nation of hyperintelligent elves when they can’t even muster the economic productivity of Italy

Tbh I think a lot of people who want the government to be more involved in society massively underrate how corrosive to trust interventions that obviously cost more than the benefit they provide are.

I love how China only knows how to make metro trains and high speed trains, which is how you get commuter trains that look like this:

This might be verging into “sportsball XD” territory but I don’t get the Ohio State Michigan rivalry. Michigan outranks a huge share of the ivies. So why does a bog standard state school’s relative ability to move a ball across a field live rent free in your head???

“Vastly more” might be milking it. It’s more of a 60-40 split in favor of suburban sprawl, which makes the actual geographical split being 95-5 extremely bad!

But moreover, we’re not a planned economy. It’s not really the government’s job to guarantee everyone’s preferences are always met
Right, this is true, but the OVERWHELMING evidence of the past 100 years of American life is that vastly more people want space and a car than a smaller unit and a car-free lifestyle. This is mostly why the suburban share of US population has grown relentlessly for the entire 20th and 21st century
Some people put a premium on space in my experience, others put a premium on not having to have a car and not being isolated out in the suburbs

Ngl this is why I don’t like when climate change is categorized as an “environmental” issues. While there’s environmental effects, the primary concern is economic!
Tbh I’m highly sympathetic to the idea that postmaterialism is the driving factor of the decline in center left parties across the developed world, the problem is that climate change poses a huge threat to material thriving in a way that like, traditional conservation doesn’t
If there’s no shale gas then there’s no shale gas, but I still think environmentalism is basically bad and politicians should focus more on material prosperity.

Tbh this is better than nothing and more politically palatable than the alternatives but let’s be honest, this is a plan for Baltimore or Albany. Rich coastal cities with existing high capacity transit need huge apartments, and a lot of them.
In a new AEI Economic Perspectives paper, Tobias Peter and I propose that DC legalize redevelopment of large single-family lots into duplexes, triplexes, and townhomes. We also analyze the consequences of making such a change in terms of new housing production etc.

It’s kinda funny that these days you can be an insanely racist Trump voter but still be considered a reasonable conservative if you say that Trump supporters have dysgenic vibes enough
Very disappointing to see @bostonglobe.com running a piece from Richard Hanania today.

Tbh the problem is that moderate vibes provide a fairly decent boost but it’s easily overwhelmed by the fact that voters have the internet now and can google how much a gallon of gas costs in California
She ran as a moderate. Maybe you think that’s good and maybe you think that’s bad. All I am arguing is that the endless takes about how Democrats should pivot to the center should explain why it didn’t work in this election (there are good reasons!) rather than pretending she didn’t.

It’s kinda funny how people critical of American foreign policy will often back Chinese foreign policy because “the strong do what they will and the weak suffer what they must” is a fairly anti-hegemonic attitude lol.

I see this meme around and it’s so dumb. Solar panels are made from a large amount of various industrial feedstocks, often including petrochemicals!

The worst part is that over deindustrialization New Jobs were legitimately good, but if AI legitimately takes a big chunk out of white collar work the sole source of employment growth right now involves old people’s bodily fluids one way or another

Apple spending its dragons hoarde of wealth pretty much exclusively on highbrow sci fi that centers questions of identity is an extremely funny outcome

Very amusing they’re doing the Brandon playbook beat by beat
oh my god, look guys I get you what you are trying to do here, but the swathe of dudes who literally think "Trump is going to send me a check with his name on it and everything's gonna be awesome!" is sadly a load-bearing part of your coalition at this point and you can't afford to shed anyone else.

Tbh it’s kinda crazy how right wingers seem to think their policies would be free. “Massively expand inpatient mental health care, quadruple the prison population, hire a lot more cops” all would require insane tax hikes lmfao.

It’s very funny how birth rates are usually presented in terms of “WE’RE BEING REPLACED!!!” Or human/ethnic extinction at worst and “well people are having less kids than they want, we should fix that” at best, when like the real issue is “who will wipe our butts when we’re too old”
