With this new year, I think it's finally time to introduce my debut story, which I've been working on for 4 years now.

An older elf, dressed in the classic elven serving suit that mimicked Santa's Christmas-Eve suit, stood behind them, holding a tray FULL of wine glasses filled with milk. "Excuse Cranberry Sauce, but are they by any chance Mr. Shin and Ms. Summer?" Shin nodded. What could they be doing wrong so early in the evening? This was a bad idea. He was totally not classy enough to attend a ball. All they had done so far was sit down, and this Cranberry Sauce guy was about to kick them out. Shin wanted to sink into the floor with embarrassment. "Very good. If they would come with him to the front door, so they can be properly announced and shown to their seats."

And if they don’t we have to wait for 3 years and then you’re 18 and we’re both adults.’ ‘The patient may never be able to live alone, and will need parental care beyond the normal age of maturity and all that. You don’t know if they’ll let me go after that age.’ ‘That’s a load of industrial crockpot-soup, and you know it. There’s nothing about you that is described by all that nonsense. You can always find a job in our Ghost Town, and a place to live too. Maybe even with live-in girlfriend.’ She winked. ‘They said I’d probably not be able to ever do a job…’ ‘They misdiagnosed you. A few Coggitio type three traits won’t make you too disabled to work. I’ve been travelling with you for more than a week now you know. I’ve seen you in action. I can vouch for you. And the beginner jobs are just working at the bar and the farm anyway.’ ‘I’m not so sure of the bar.’ ‘Aunt Leya will teach you. They have more timid introverts working there. I mean, Elder Michael worked in the Square bare for ages. He isn’t exactly the wildest extrovert either, is he?’ ‘I don’t know. It’s all so new. I’ve alway heard I’d have a future full of problems and limitations, and you just barge in an tell me much more is possible. It’s a shock.’ ‘Sorry, am I going too fast? They always call me a whirlwind.’ ‘Not with the relationship thing. Eh… But I need time to let some things sink in. And I need time to think of what I’ll say to my parents and stuff. And what I’ll do with school. I’m in the wrong class, but I don’t know how to do anything about that if they all think I’ll never be able to do anything else.’ ‘You’ll find a way’ she said, and wrapped him in a hug again. ‘And you’re not alone.’

Which means there’s no point in worrying about it, not right now.* Or, at least, that was what she was going to keep telling herself. *** ‘Avebury’, Fest wrote, at the top of a clean page, ‘is definitely up to something.’ It wasn’t incorrect, as starting assumptions went. The problem was, it was also so much a fundamental truth of the universe that it was about as useful as writing ‘the sea is wet’ or ‘the sky is grey’ or ‘Anneke hates the University’.

I was hoping I wasn’t going to have to do this but December is difficult and yesterday someone tried to use my bank account to spend $378 on a company in Germany. So my card is canceled and I can’t even use the small amount in my account to pay bills.

“Think of what this place means to you, Danbi. How it made you who you are. And reach for the heat at your fingertips.” I listen to the forest. I think of my days in the woods, turning over stones, floating in the creek, dreaming up worlds. Of sitting in the brush outside the apartment building, peering up from my book to search for my mom in the window. My hand reflexively reaches to the side, and I imagine the feel of hickory bark beneath the pads of my fingertips. And then I feel something. A kind of intensity in the air—a broad, gentle warmth, like holding your hand over a frying pan to test its heat. I shift my fingers an inch, and they feel hotter now. Elated, I lunge for the heat, my hand swooping through the air. The heat vanishes. I open my eyes. Nothing. “Try again.” “I felt something, but it was—” “It takes time. You must be steady. Try again.” I do. I try a second, third, and fourth time, but to no avail. Every attempt, something is off-balance—I move too hurriedly or too sluggishly, grab for the heat too aggressively or too softly, render the mental visual too vaguely or too inflexibly. After the twelfth attempt, Vega calls it a day, and we leave the Habitat. I trudge through the woods in defeated silence. But as we part ways, she says, “Come here again tomorrow. We made progress today, whether you realize it or not.”

I stumble onto the landing pad the second the ramp touches down and fall to my knees. I realise it’s been quite a while since I’ve had anything in my stomach, because I’m heaving but nothing is coming out. After the fourth abdominal contraction my body gives up and goes back to mostly normal, and I’m left panting. “You don’t look too good,” Driona comments from beside me. “Really? What gave you that idea?” Driona chuckles in a very human manner and holds something near my head. I look to see what it is and it’s some sort of cylindrical metal container. “What’s that?” I ask. “Water, just normal water. Your species drinks water, right?” I stare at it for a moment, reach out and take it from her. The top springs open to show clear water inside. I smell it, and there’s nothing bad to it. I then up-end the entirety of the cylinder’s contents down my throat. It’s just on the bearable side of ice cold, and it goes down wonderfully. I cough a few times as I hand it back to her. “Thank you. I needed that.”
