Poem: “The Kids That Look Like Me Keep Dying” Leaning bicycles on old iron fences. The kids grow out their bowl cuts. The merry-go-round weeps behind the Baptist church. The kids of a few weak summers. The kids listen to the good stuff in the dark. They rent VHS tapes and eat Mike and Ikes with eyes closed. Every day is a happier end of the world when the kids that look like me keep dying. Born triggers without hands. See: comparison between forests and backyards. The outskirts of growing up twice. If there is mercy, it will go in order. One day or three.

as someone who grew up in Lynchburg & the inescapable shadow of Liberty University, I have firsthand experience of how evangelical Christian RW politics are not only ruining things nationally but currently destroying my hometown

Like the kudzu vine that chokes and constricts the Southern United States, Liberty University has enveloped every aspect of living in Lynchburg. What was once Jerry Falwell Sr.’s grassroots Moral Majority educational venture has exploded into one of the city’s largest employers. Liberty is a socio-political Cronenberg monster of influence and property management. When driving down Wards Road, it’s impossible to ignore the massive sprawl of buildings behind major chain retailers. The city continues to attract Christian-leaning businesses like Hobby Lobby and Mardel. Oh look, another coffee shop that donates to Christian nonprofits in the area. A crisis pregnancy center masquerading as women’s health—by the way, the closest Planned Parenthood is in Roanoke, Virginia, about an hour away. Four Chick-Fil-As within driving distance of each other.
