Looking through Sandman again and there is some very dark shit in there (restaurant scene anyone?). Kinda leaves you wondering now whether it wasn't just some expression of his inner fantasy life. So unbelievably sad and disappointed.

I struggle more with exploration turns turning potentially turning the passage of time into a resource management game.

You'd need a way to create urgency and scarcity in those settings. Dungeon turns as a background timer works well to drive action and risk reward decision making but agree if overly focused on and treated mechanically it breaks immersion.
