Oak galls on Hackney Marsh. Right, a knopper (wasp) gall. Left, I've not noticed this one before, they're made by the gorgeously named Silk-button Spangle Gall Wasp (thanks, Seek app).

Both wasps produce an autumn generation of parthenogenetic females & then in Spring a sexual generation. Amazing

Neil's first go at waxing leaders on #Warré bars. Comb wax from past seasons (foundation free so no pesticides). Bain Marie. A water-soaked guide piece held against the bar. And that vital tool, a cunningly bent teaspoon. And ... voilá!

The apples went down well, so here are some Charles Ross from the garden. You can feed a household on one. Early cropper, doesn't keep but delicious for quick eating/cooking/juicing. 19th-c Cox/Peasgood cross by a Berkshire gent's gardener, & I raise my glass to Mr Ross.

Who wants to see some apples? Proudly harvested on our allotment today. Varieties are (I think): pic 1, back, Red Windsor, front left Sunset, right Red Falstaff; pic2, left Kidd's Orange Red, right Karmijn de Sonnaville.

In Alnwick for family so I rolled round to Barter Books, completely #wheelchair-able & always comes up with treasure, this time the 1941 edn of comic classic No Bed For Bacon. I lent & lost my nice Hogarth reprint to a friend who died last month so maybe her apologetic spirit put it there.
