It worked really well, and had an excellent tuner -- something that's become rare in modern cars. Of course, it helped that mine was in a diesel, which meant very little electrical noise to interfere with the AM band.

Features included direct frequency entry (press *, enter the digits for the station you want), three different seek sensitivity levels (each time you looped through the band without stopping, it got sensitive to weaker stations), a nap timer, and direct time entry for the clock.

the combination of doomerism plus the expectation that everything in the world occur at twitter-speed is really killing our ability to understand how things like the legal system work.

I think I've carried off my life plan pretty well, but I still can't keep track of small stuff unless I always put it in the same place. If the car keys aren't in the tray by the door they might as well have exploded. We have two key fobs for the Clarity and I haven't seen one of them in weeks.

I'm wondering if my "explicit" they just mean "clear that sex is what's going to happen."

We're discussing trans rights and Sarah McBride. If you want to argue about immigration enforcement, find another post.

Was she wrong, though? We *do* live in a democracy, and you *can* only move as fast as you can bring people along. I don't think admitting we have to have a strategy to educate people, lest the gap be filled with fearmongering, is transphobic. People are not going to just naturally be sympathetic.

Yeah, I suspect the original poster has a different definition of "explicit" than I do. But every generation has its annoying prudes. It's the American way!

What could be more liberal-coded than abusive British boarding schools?
January 26, 2026 at 10:32 PM
Unless you can point to a case where McBride has done something *actually* anti-trans, this strikes me as just another case of valuing people who make precisely the right left-coded mouth noises over people who actually accomplish something.

Same issue, though. I want politicians to support trans rights. But if you campaign on nothing but trans rights, people who aren't trans aren't going to vote for you. We kind of fell into a trap where talking about any other issues meant you "weren't saying it with your full chest" and were fake.

We had an election where Harris said "I would follow the law," at a time when following the law meant gender-affirming care, and the left still kicked her tot he curb for not saying "trans rights" loudly enough. There's some truth to the idea that people had unreasonable expectations of politicians.

We've always had this weird relationship with sex, culturally, where both wanting it too much and not wanting it are seen as shameful.
January 26, 2026 at 10:21 PM
It's one of those things that goes through cycles, I feel. There was a teen purity push in some subcultures in the 90s, too. It tends to happen when mainstream culture has gotten especially sex-saturated.

I mean, the argument I saw here when she first took office was that we would have been better off without her, and I pretty strongly disagree with that.
January 26, 2026 at 10:11 PM
I really don't see this as any kind of mainstream position, to be honest.
January 26, 2026 at 10:10 PM
Where? And was this while she was being attacked for not leaving office in protest over her own bathroom access?
