US went to war with: the best rifle, both semiautomatic and bolt action, in the world, best sidearm, probably the best artillery, and this is ignoring the bevy of air and naval assets as well as non-weapons stuff like radar, electronics miniaturizing, and general technique for utilizing them.
People love the myth that the US went to war with technically inferior weapons and that's wildly incorrect. The viewpoint represents an over-fitting on weapons systems in isolation without an understanding of the system that makes such a weapon lethal and decisive.

Knew a guy who pulled security at a ski resort in Montana, spoke passable Mandarin, and had to break up a fist fight between two Chinese families that started as an argument about whether American or Chinese cigarettes were better
I went to Barnes and Noble today and there was a full fledged shouting match going on between two families in the parking lot. Ah, the holidays.

The origins are F'd up, but its purpose was noble both then and now. Lincoln made it a holiday during a time of unprecedented crisis to remind us all to be thankful for what we have because everything was so freaking sh*tty.

I consider this a similar Thanksgiving.

Happy Turkeyday!

10 will get you 20 he could have bought a Honda Ridgeline for about $45k and it would have done everything the rolling apartment 1/2(3/4) did for what he is realistically using it for.
one of the least sympathetic microgenres of post is, "I financed an extremely expensive truck at fairly normal APRs and am paying HOW MUCH in interest?!"

my uncle is broke as shit in his 60s in large part from making this exact sort of decision multiple times

"Too many books"

Did my wife write this?
Twitter accounts are based in Russia. BlueSky accounts are based in homes with, frankly, too many books, plants, obsolete cables, and pieces of rustic pottery, that could do with a bit of a tidying up, to be honest.

I just want to note that if you're removing the *CIA Mission Center* (presuming this is DIROPS/DO) lawyer because they won't sign off on your strike, you're almost certainly doing something seriously unlawful.

Those folks excel at obscure legal justifications in the "lawful but awful" category.
On the patently unlawful boat strikes

It's hard for USGs to claim ‘mistake of law’ or ‘advice of counsel’ – when they’re firing lawyers who wouldn't sign off on the strikes.

WaPo's new revelations on firings or removals:

1) CIA General Counsel
2) NSC Legal Adviser
3) CIA Mission Center’s lawyer
🧵
White House blew past legal concerns in deadly strikes on drug boats
The Trump administration sidestepped skeptical lawyers across national security agencies as it pursued a military campaign against alleged narcotraffickers, officials say.

In undergrad I had a mentor prof who I ran into after school and she asked how I was doing. Meh. She asked what I would do if I could.

I said "MA in Public History, work at a park somewhere". She asked what's stopping me. "Need more than 30k to live on".

"Can't you just ask your parents to help?"
basically every single measure of academic achievement is correlated with family income for pretty obvious reasons. the ~20% of SAT variation explained by family SES makes it one of the measures *least* determined by this.
And then we can go on to discuss the fact the only consistent correlation for SAT scores (as well as other standardized educational assessments) is to family income level--which in turn is nicely correlated to race/ethnicity for minoritized Americans.
