some of it also i think is that the art direction for hades 2 is just generally less compelling (see aphrodite’s sprite below). hades 1 wants to communicate a distinctive interpretation of ancient myth, hades 2 wants to communicate that it is the sequel to hades 1

which feels to me like more of an interesting creative choice (how do you make a character who necessarily must be the personification of sex feel non-pornographic/male-gaze-y) as opposed to e.g. h2’s nemesis, whose design feels a more cynically designed to appeal to people who drew porn of hades 1

as someone who has played hades (sit down ladies, a real gamer is speaking) i found a lot of the art direction in hades 1 interesting bc of its safe horniness. aphrodite’s character sprite in the first game is interesting because it clearly signals eroticism without actually being, uh, sexy
