On top of THE NAKED GUN being so stupidly funny (without even needing grade it on a curve of 2020s comedies), it also looks good, too! Like a real movie! With proper lighting and real shooting locations and actors on the same set as each other interacting with one another. And extras!! What a hoot!

All these dudes talking about “exotic energy fields”, “cryptotravellers” and “an entire world under the water” while sitting in wood-panelled rooms and walking through government buildings pretending to act serious (lots of purposeful walking and staring at the middle distance). Reads as camp to me.

Gotta be honest here, THE AGE OF DISCLOSURE gave off big mockumentary vibes. And I say this as somebody who, like Ellie Arroway, believes it'd be a waste of space for us to be here by ourselves. But these men (all men!) talk like pop girlie stans defending their fave's flop. Like, go off diva, yes.

UDO KIER! A man for whom casting agents was an easy get, but for filmmakers was a lightning bolt of energy. Always able to deliver *something* with *whatever* he had to work with. However, I am glad that he got something like SWAN SONG in the last few years to remind us he could do that, too.

Yes.

Okay, but here’s the thing: first, THE FAMILY STONE is an evil movie. Second… her character would have died 20+ years ago. Like, Craig T Nelson’s character has definitely been remarried for over a decade. Those kids’ relationships are not all still together, either. This will never get made.

The idea of using “workers cottages” as an argument against developments as if the people who live there haven’t renovated the shit outta them bypassing any concept of heritage in the process. They’re no longer the homes of garbos, factory workers and cleaners, but bureaucrats and consultants.

This behind the scenes shot of a miniature from Del Toro’s FRANKENSTEIN looks better than the movie itself (which is generally liked).

Every single one of the choices made by the remake of THE HAND THAT ROCKS THE CRADLE is inferior to the original, but I kind of found myself intrigued by as an intellectual exercise. Both feature the defining styles of their era. Takes its IP and just goes in a very different direction at all times.

Technically, it's a feast. Loved the costumes and the makeup and one of Desplat's finest scores in a while. But in adapting the novel, Del Toro has obviously made some big changes yet still never feels free of being 'another frankenstein movie'. A reframing would have felt really special and new.

I saw FRANKENSTEIN the other week in the cinema and now it's on Netflix. I was honestly quite into it. Then Elordi as the Monster takes over and it's like, oh damn, this is what the whole movie should've been. GDT didn't know what he had and by then it was too late so instead it's messy gothic-ish.

Finally took the plunge and watched SHOAH. I couldn't pass up the opportunity to make my first viewing one on the big screen. An incredible feat of filmmaking. A fascinating technical exercise as much as it is an impeccably told testimonial for one of humanity's greatest failures. A bold experience.

More of the delightfully entertaining subtitles from THE SPIDER LABYRINTH.
November 8, 2025 at 2:46 AM
Watched Gianfranco Giagni's THE SPIDER LABYRINTH and dug it a whole lot. It's like being set in Hungary was a bit of a vibe shift that I quite enjoyed compared to other giallos. The production design is particularly great. Whoever did the subtitles was really on one, though. Thesaurus on overtime.

If you want to remember the absolute shitshow that being gay was in the 2000s, this book I saw at the op shop is a frightening reminder. A terrifying image of what was expected of us as we came out of the closet with nothing but Queer Eye or Will & Grace (boo hiss Debra Messing) as mainstream guides

It would seem that the ACCC lawsuit against Microsoft worked! Emailed this morning with the offer of a return to the old Microsoft365 suite without AI Co-pilot and a refund on the charges. In the bin!

This AI golden girls artwork from America’s ABC is just… we already have pictures of them! They have literally just AI’d a pre-existing still. They already looked like real people. Do people think this will convince young people to watch? What happens when they see they don’t look like this? Ugh!

Saddened to hear of the death of Australian documentarian and experimental filmmaker Ivan Gaal. Typically for this industry, his passing went unacknowledged by the greater news cycles and I only just found out. I'm a big fan of some of his works like TANDBERG ON PAGE ONE and CAMBERWELL JUNCTION.

Movies (like @jamieblanks.bsky.social Urban Legend) used to have real publicity photo shoots, maaann! In the toilet and everything.

I really dug Sean Byrne's DANGEROUS ANIMALS. A shark movie where the shark isn't actually a villain. Plays a bit like WOLF CREEK at sea without the gut-churning bleakness. The horror has weight thanks to the writing and a Jai Courtney perf that thankfully doesn't go full wacko. That'd be too easy.

The short shorts of SLEEPAWAY CAMP are one of the cinematic wonders of the 1980s. A truly divine collection of cropped denim, athletic briefs and hammock designs made of material barely able to contain the genitals beneath. Glorious!!

Carlton have sacked one of their mascot performers because he stormed out of a bar mitzvah when he discovered money raised was going to fund the IDF. That club is truly bottom rung with no talent or morals. Just a dog of a team.

Okay, but really? What does this function of Instagram do?!?
