Planning my holiday weekend around watching Ep 5 of Pluribus. (Which, I know, dropped at 9 PM ET last night. What can I say? Events intervened.)

I don't know who this guy is (just a disclaimer, I guess), but this is a compelling and arithmetically straightforward explanation of the many predicaments the US finds itself in. Why upward mobility in America is a myth and class warfare is on the rise. Read it over your morning coffee.

Busy night last night at Bar Gilman, forgot to post. Only a little quieter this evening, as the grandkids are sleeping over. But I have fortified myself with this Lion’s Tail, augmented with egg white. For the protein, of course.

From the Deep Cuts department, I'm learning Medicated Goo by Traffic on guitar. Fun song to play. But, more importantly, it has caused me to rediscover this live album, whose grooves I burned through for many years. It's short but captures a particularly incandescent version of this band.

What the everloving f*ck is wrong with these people?
JD Vance calls ibuprofen "useless medication" and implies it's not "necessary, safe and effective."

I think maybe our friends at Bluesky lost the thread on this.

You can criticize Johnny Cash for the (fictional) line from Folsom Prison Blues, "I shot a man in Reno just to watch him die."

But to suspend someone for referencing this line to defend Johnny Cash from being called uncool in the WSJ?
The account owner of @sarahkendzior.bsky.social was suspended for 72 hours for expressing a desire to shoot the author of an article. The post, made 11/10, stated: "I want to shoot the author of this article just to watch him die." 1/2

As someone who worked with and around Jim Watson for seven years at Cold Spring Harbor and whose professional career is built on opportunities he provided me, it's been a struggle for me to rationalize the man. I'm grateful to Jeremy for taking the time to do that so thoughtfully here.
Bluetorial-Jim Watson

I met Jim Watson a few times but did not know him well. However, I was greatly influenced by his book “The Double Helix”. He was a complicated human being with some very, very bad features, but some good contributions.

What follows is my personal perspective.

Wow, first my PhD advisor and now Jim Watson, who gave me my first professional job (at Cold Spring Harbor).

Quite a week.
My thesis advisor Mike Chamberlin passed away last week at his home in Berkeley. I've reflected on what I learned from him and how it has served me for over forty years.

Thanks to @lifescivc.bsky.social for hosting the post on his Life Sci VC site.

At least he'd heard about it. That's an improvement.
Mike Johnson: "I don't think the loss last night was any reflection about Republicans at all. I think people are frustrated and angry, as we are, I am, the president is, and we express that in different ways."
