December 2025 was the driest on record for Oklahoma, 2nd driest for Arkansas, 3rd for Missouri and Texas, and 4th for Kansas. Washington, Idaho, Montana, and Wyoming had extremely wet Decembers ranking in their top 10.

I remember running a local large-eddy simulation on my desktop in grad school and being okay with it taking 7 days to run. Now, I am grumpy when I have to wait for more than an hour on my laptop.

An NWS AI generated graphic with crazy placenames has went viral, potentially jeopardizing trust in the NWS and in extremely promising AI meteorological applications. We need to be clear about the various AI technologies in question - and be cautious of generating "AI slop." tinyurl.com/3ds83yn2
Will "AI Slop" derail a potential revolution in weather forecasting?

I worry the framing of the first phrase is leading people to misattribute the errors described in the second. Yes, there is a push to incorporate ML/AI techniques to augment and/or complement prediction models. But the map was seemingly just a poor attempt by an LLM/whatevs to display existing data.
Amid a big agency push to use AI models in weather prediction, the National Weather Service shared a forecast map riddled with spelling mistakes, non-existent locations and other geographical errors.

This was very fun to work on, emerging from student class projects a few years ago. How sharp can a cold front get? We were able to point to some answers.
It hasn't been cold this December, but 3 years ago it got cold in a hurry. Do you remember the cold front on December 21, 2022? It was extreme in all kinds of ways, which you can read about in this blog post.

Among the highlights: the temperature dropped almost 25°F in ten seconds in Akron! #cowx
