Yes! This is what copyeditors do: decrease the mental effort of reading a book. It’s not dumbing down; it’s removing unnecessary impediments so that the story or the argument shines through.
One thing about copy editing a book is that you're not just correcting what's wrong or repetitive or awkward. You're also making about a thousand teeny changes so that it'll take just a little less mental effort to read, because everything is immediately clear.

Can’t believe this needs to be said but… downloading ebooks illegally is theft. It’s an author’s livelihood & a lot of authors don’t make much to begin with. There are libraries & authors willing to give free copies if you really can’t afford it. Don’t steal from artists😫.

All over social media, I keep seeing, "oh, but he can't do X, Y,Z, it's unconstitutional".
