What does it mean, if the national equality body aggressively pursues discrimination; if the energy regulator rubber-stamps huge price hikes; if the water authority does nothing about shit in the rivers and the press regulator occasionally ticks off a newspaper? What is the purpose of “regulation”.
I was concerned that Dr Mary-Ann Stephenson might try and be smarter about transphobia than her predecessors and leave trans people in a shit place than was harder to rectify because it wasn’t so obvious.

Today dispelled those worries.

Labour have appointed a second raving bigot to run the EHRC.

I rarely feel so ‘at home’ anywhere as in a university, and I often miss being based in one. But I’m incredibly - deliriously, almost - relieved not to be battling AI from within academia.
I finally got around to reading this. You should read it too.

"We are exporting the very labor of teaching and learning—the slow work of wrestling with ideas, the enduring of discomfort, doubt and confusion, the struggle of finding one’s own voice."

AI is Destroying the University and Learning Itself
Students use AI to write papers, professors use AI to grade them, degrees become meaningless, and tech companies make fortunes. Welcome to the death of higher education.

Wes Streeting orders review of mental health diagnoses as benefit claims soar
Wes Streeting orders review of mental health diagnoses as benefit claims soar
Health secretary has asked experts to investigate whether normal feelings have become ‘over-pathologised’ The health secretary, Wes Streeting, has ordered a clinical review of the diagnosis of mental health conditions, according to reports. Streeting is understood to be concerned about a sharp rise in the number of people making sickness benefits claims because of diagnoses for mental illness, autism and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), the Times reported. He has asked leading experts to investigate whether normal feelings have become “over-pathologised”, the newspaper said, as he seeks to grapple with the 4.4 million working-age people now claiming sickness or incapacity benefit. The figure has risen by 1.2 million since 2019, while the number of 16 to 34-year-olds off work with long-term sickness because of a mental health condition is said to have grown rapidly in the same period. Streeting told the Times he knew from “personal experience how devastating it can be for people who face poor mental health, have ADHD or autism and can’t get a diagnosis or the right support”. He added: “I also know, from speaking to clinicians, how the diagnosis of these conditions is sharply rising. “We must look at this through a strictly clinical lens to get an evidence-based understanding of what we know, what we don’t know, and what these patterns tell us about our mental health system, autism and ADHD services. “That’s the only way we can ensure everyone gets timely access to accurate diagnosis and effective support.” The review, which is expected to be launched on Thursday, is set to be led by Prof Peter Fonagy, a clinical psychologist at University College London specialising in child mental health, with Sir Simon Wessely, a former president of the Royal College of Psychiatry, acting as vice-chair. This correct, and almost none of it is organically arising from the public. The relentless fear and hate of the last decade was deliberately imposed by opportunist politicians, toxic media outlets, crackpot activists and malignant squillionaires, working hand in hand towards similar goals.
There is absolutely nothing left to the UK but bigotry and spite. A hateful place, you can almost taste it in the air, makes it hard to breathe.
Seems there has been some co-ordination.

i'd go even further and say there is a reason even nixon kept this kind of stuff to himself. you would have to go back quite a bit to find a point at which is acceptable for a president to say anything like this *in public*, to say nothing of in the oval office.
I don’t want to be pollyannish about the past, but it was basically inconceivable twenty years ago that a president would say this publicly
Trump: "It’s a hellhole right now. And those Somalians should be out of here. They've destroyed our country. And all they do is complain, complain, complain. You have her. She’s always talking about the Constitution provides me with – go back to your own country and figure out your constitution."

Think of the catalogue of social cruelty and indignities that have been visited upon an 80-year-old trans woman in her lifetime, now she’s being forced out of her one safe space. Those rancid cigar-smoking bigots should’ve been deemed vexatious litigants, instead they’re calling the shots. Heartsick
Just cruel. No justification beyond cruelty.

The truth is that there are many good people in good institutions regretfully making the choice to sacrifice trans people because they fear for their own survival and their institution's survival...
