This beautiful lithograph shows the Allars Mill unconformity in Jedburgh.

Similar to Siccar Point, the section shows folded Silurian greywackes overlain by horizontal Devonian sandstone.

xckd coming of a flowchart. The top reads "someone is claiming to predict the exact date of a future earthquake. Should you listen?" A diamond-shape says "start" and one arrow leads to a box reading "NO" in very large letters, followed by "(there are big earthquakes constantly, so if anyone ever DOES figure this out, it will be immediately obvious that their method works and then the world's seismologists will not shut up about it. You won't need this flowchart."

I love #minerals that could pass as an alien artefact 😅. There's quite a lot going on in this specimen: blue fluorite octahedra all orientated in the same direction, golden chalcopyrite crystals, more fluorite (but purple this time) and a nice coating of white-yellow quartz! #MineralMonday
A triangular shaped specimen which resembles a pizza slice. There's a bed of fine, minute white to off-yellow quartz crystals (like cheese on a pizza). This quartz is partially covering blue fluorite octahedra, which have triangular faces all pointing upwards in the same direction. Embedded in the specimen are some purple fluorite crystals and golden coloured chalcopyrite. Label text: Blue octahedra in parallel position coated with quartz, chalcopyrite and purple fluorite. Caradon Mine, Cornwall. Specimen on display in the Natural History Museum, London.

Published between 1802 and 1817, British Mineralogy and Exotic Mineralogy comprise 718 illustrations by James Sowerby in an effort to illustrate the topographical mineralogy of Great Britain and minerals not then known to it. Sowerby’s plates are some of the finest examples of hand-drawn mineral illustrations ever created. The detail and care with which these illustrations were created is incredible and worthy of close examination. Most of Sowerby’s 718 illustrations contained multiple drawings, totaling 2,242 individual images which were arranged by color into a large interactive collage and poster celebrating Sowerby’s work.
