I've tried repeatedly over the years, and never found anything.

Late 1970s/Early 1980s. How To Play Chess book, in a comic format. I think three-panel structure, which makes me think a newspaper or magazine reprint. Glamorous people playing - Hal Foster-y art. Pieces as occasional characters
