Board games!
Agreed 100%! A set of rules cannot inherently be mean. Only players can be mean or perceive mean-ness.

A competitive move should not be perceived as mean - that’s what everyone signed up for. A spiteful (meta, non-competitive move) move is mean, but has little to do with the design.

Hab’s mir gerade angehört! Jetzt kann ich deine Deutsch-stimme hören wenn ich deine Posts lese 😁

I’ve only played digitally, and never against a human opponent. Wouldn’t surprise me if I picked up a copy on a whim eventually.

One that I’ve always wanted to try! I love Camel Up, and would eagerly play Knizia’s race betting game. I wonder when this one will get a new treatment!

Oh man, I sold my copy of this version because I was buying the newer-ish version of Schotten Totten. For whatever reason, I still don’t have a replacement 😩 Such a great game!

We love this one as well. The arc of the shrinking safety net is really fun.

Fiddler On The Roof director’s cut? 😜

Member of the game group recently got a copy, I’ll see if I can squeeze in a play sometime!

Owned & Unplayed No. 1: Die Macher

I’ve done a silly thing. I want to play this game so badly that I’ve bought 2 copies - an older edition and the new one 🙄

Not keeping both long-term. But I’m convinced this game is for me, if I can only put together a session! 😆😩

Some great games in there!

Play a Second Time, No. 1: Grand Austria Hotel

I didn’t love my 1st play, but I blame expectations vs reality (a theme on this list). I may come to love it, or I may see it as just another remix from the Italian design group.

The real test will be if my wife enjoys it or not. If not, it’s gone!

I REALLY want to try this one. Sits in a try-before-you-buy space for me, but all signs point to me enjoying it.
January 31, 2024 at 6:42 AM
Definitely warrants exploring the design space! I’m always down to play this, but I’d be very eager to play with people outside my current group. We’ve kinda developed a meta that is making it less interesting. But maybe I’m not being creative enough in countering the meta…

Owned and Unplayed No. 2: Riverboat

Why so high on the list? It seems to be a companion piece to my all-time favorite game, Heaven & Ale.

Not much more to say right now, other than more and more of my group are becoming fans of H&A, which may make it easier to convince them to try Riverboat 🤞

I’ve got the expansion, and am eager to try it all at 5p. I get the impression that’s the ideal experience. Will report when I’m able to make it happen!

Play a Second Time, No. 2: Babylonia

Bought this at a con a couple years back, played a quick 2p learning round then and there. Haven’t touched it since, despite being very interested.

I really want to run this one through its paces, play it at least 2x at each player count to evaluate it.

Got it played! Family dinner with some of the in-laws, had 2 games of 8p, mixed adults and kids 8-14yo. I really like this one.

I’m learning I like my social deduction games snappy but still meaningful. This and Scape Goat are probably my favorites.

Owned & Unplayed No. 3: The Princes of Florence

It’s just a classic that I gotta try! If I like it, there’s a decent chance I’ll upgrade to the new edition.

Some circles point to this game as starting the divide between old school German style and modern euros. Gotta know my history!

Play a Second Time, No. 3: Smartphone Inc.

A weird hill to die on, but this is not an economic game. It has an economic setting, but the mechanisms are NOT economic.

That mismatch of expectations, in combination with the hype, made my 1st play a bit of a letdown. So we try again! I may love it?

I picked this up near the end of last year. I really want to play it, but it’s just one that I’m consciously not allowing to stress me out (for not getting played)
