Board games!
Turned into an aviation themed day yesterday! Played Airlines Europe with the game group, first play for everyone. I’d say it lived up to expectations nicely 😁

Completed our first yellow-difficulty landing today. Sky Team would certainly be an interesting SdJ winner!

I’m officially headed to Dice Tower West! Took a second to get it all figured out, but I’ll be there over the weekend.

Any of my followers I may see there?

January 2024 in the books. Had to squeeze in LAMA Dice with the kids tonight, just to finally get an H-index of 3 😆 Fun month with some interesting insights.

Had to split it into 2 nights 🤦🏻‍♂️ but we got City of the Big Shoulders played! I taught 3 first-timers and came in last. I qualify as a good teacher! 😆 Everyone is eager to play again.

And it puts me ahead of schedule for my goal to play 2023’s top ten.

Christmas game 3 of 6, learned and played. Honga!

Impressed with the whole package - innovative action selection, solid mix of mechanisms to make up the rest of the game. Great artwork and fun wooden pieces.

It wouldn’t be fare for my game group, but will serve the family well for many years.

It had been waaaay too long, but I was reminded last night why I like Mini Rails so much. 4p, 3 new to the game. Low scoring, and I got last. Too invested in a company that never paid taxes, but I almost got away with it 😆

Imma try to do a games-in:games-out log for 2024. I’ll feint shame for games in, genuinely celebrate games out.

1st entry: in: Airlines Europe. Got lucky, grabbed it used for a steal!

BUT I FEEL SHAME.

My cousin surprised us last night, showed up wanting to play a game. Ended up playing 4p (all adults 😆) Mysterium Kids! Fun all around.

Owned & Unplayed No. 10: Municipium

This seemingly forgotten Knizia title has received positive attention from a couple different hobby personalities I trust. Tracked this one down used, now I gotta find some willing players!

Play a Second Time, No. 10: Sheepy Time

First play was with 2 of my kiddos, probably 6 and 8yo at the time. They liked it well enough, but haven’t expressed interest in playing again.

To evaluate it better, I think I need to play with a couple people ages 12+, ideally with my wife as well.

Starting 2 new top 10 countdowns, again inspired by @rexdevlin.bsky.social.

The first is Owned & Unplayed. Loosely ordered in terms of excitement to play, and anticipation of it being my type of game. As opposed to a keep/cull evaluation, which can also motivate shelf of shame plays.

One of my goals for ‘24 is to play each game from my ‘23 Top 10 at least 1x. Odd that has to be a goal 🙃 but I need to play more of the games I know I love.

Power Grid was never at risk of not getting played, but knocked it out yesterday. First play of the China map. An unexpectedly brutal arc‼️

Just played another game of Sea Salt & Paper. I don’t think I’ve seen the 10yo so engaged in a game. Very fun to witness that, and I enjoyed the gameplay myself. I foresee many plays of this in our future!

2024 is off to a wild start for life in general. Hoping things settle down soon 🙃

But! we’ve learned 2 of the new games we got for Christmas: Sunrise Lane and Sea Salt & Paper.

SL: very simple, nice things to discover. An annoying shortcoming of the rulebook.

SSP: really great. 10yo loves it.

Here’s my post in visual form. I’m feel disappointment as I notice only 3 of these are currently available in retail. Disappointed because I wish more people had easy access to them.

But also disappointed that I may have a bias towards the hard-to-get games I own 😬 I really hope that’s not it…

No. 1: Heaven & Ale. This has been my number one for many years, really since it came out. I wax philosophical with this one.

It’s a grand exercise in delayed gratification on one side, balanced by immediate needs and limited opportunities later, if you delay everything til the end.

No. 2: City of the Big Shoulders. Make your little companies powerful, and get piece of other companies’ success! And start another little company!

The sense of escalation in the game is really astounding. Share management is tense. Worker placement battles can be brutal. Long but amazing.

No. 3: The Estates. The twists and turns! Teaming up/manipulating! And the auction mechanism of paying or getting paid - so good!

Prime example of playing the players.
December 30, 2023 at 5:04 AM
No. 4: Tigris & Euphrates. It feels timeless. Definitely abstract. Definitely thematic.

I’m anxious to get better at this game. Sadly, it’s more difficult to get to the table (at least in my circles) than I’d like.

No. 5: Concordia. So glad I worked through the dryness. Can’t fault anyone for not liking the game, but I definitely encourage newcomers to try it a couple times before final judgment.

And what a flexible system! Gracefully handles a la carte variants - maps, teams, salt, fish, forum tiles, etc.

Number 6: Fresh Fish. This came up surprisingly high on my list, but after seeing it in my pubmeeple results, I honestly couldn’t argue against it.

Each turn is full of questions - play offense or defense? Be conservative or aggressive? Such great tension throughout.
