I guess I always assumed they worked out the day they'd be statistically likely to get their millionth customer and gave it to a random person that day, but thinking about it this was always the more likely method.

(My favourite was the elderly woman who needed to be taught how to use a mouse but was delighted that the keyboard worked just like the one from when she used to work as a typist.)

As a teenage volunteer I was the Computer Buddy in my local library and 90% of my role was teaching people to type and set up email addresses so they could apply for jobs because the jobcentre would only let them apply online but didn't provide computers (they needed the space for security guards)
