We are the quiet unnoticed Heron. Inspiring Heroneers all over Planet Earth, as you encounter Heronkind for 1st or 1000th time.
"Nature is reported in the fullness of life... To the full heart she is all but a figure of speech"-Thoreau www.everyheron.com

In olden days people saw Heron as some of the saddest, wretched, depressed creatures. Perhaps they just saw themselves reflected?

Today people who stop to watch describe us as meditating, thoughtful, wise, and seeing the world better than most. Again, reflections. 💙 (1804)
Fox invites the Heron to dinner but only provides a shallow plate of soup which the bird is unable to partake of because of its long beak

In retaliation, Heron invites Fox, providing food in a bottle with long narrow neck: Fox is unable to share in this food

Moral: What a waste of everyone's time!
And here is the story preserved in stone on the façade of the Royal Courts of Justice in London

Aurora Cloud Heron... The most mysterious and rarely seen of Heronkind. 🌌
these are some of my favorites with this cute little cloud in the foreground, looking like some kind of critter, or a heron flying into the aurora, or maybe a ufo

I explored the story of the @rspb.bsky.social campaign against feather fashions in detail doi.org/10.1002/pan3...
Feather fashions involved using not only feathers but also wings, skins, heads and whole bodies. And they were not limited to egret feathers, but involved all species of birds!

That Aesop memo changed everything, as this classic from Heroneer @pnwkate.bsky.social shows - a Coyote and Heron play together

Fox, coyote and Heron used to wind each other up with dirty tricks. But as Aesop recorded, they learned it wasn't worth it, and now they're more relaxed in each other's company.

The competition is, as ever, at such a high (literally 😏) standard. The judges will have to fall back on a photo finish 🏁

Who can dispute the crucial role of herons in churches? @everyheron.bsky.social

This pair in Selborne have their pectinate toes full, dealing with the chaos caused by St Francis kindly feeding the birds. At one point, it seemed as though the hoopoe might be accidentally trodden on!

Heron don't flap.
They leave that most vulgar way of flying to the birds.
Instead, Herons Shape the Air ™
On the ground, the Great Blue Heron is not the world's most beautiful bird. Let's face it, they're funny looking! But in the air, soaring with that 7 to 8 foot wingspan, that disappears-- and what I see is one of the world's most beautiful, graceful birds in flight.

But a prayer

There's a lot to a Least
A lot more than many
Imagine
It's way more than zero
Not much less than great

~ A Poem by Every upon the Least Bittern, 30cm long, about the size of a pigeon.

(This time quoting the true Heronographer)
This is the only Least Bittern I have photographed in my life. This is the smallest member of the heron family, and its conservation status is of Least Concern. Bosque del Apache, New Mexico. For the #least theme of #BirdOfTheDay #EastCoastKin #birds

Sometimes you're Heroneering without even realising.

Only to discover later, that you were in a Heronful moment.

Never assume no Heron! #HeroneerTipOfTheDay
I didn’t even notice the blue heron camouflaged under a bush until I started editing later on. Trail to Glass Beach in the fog.
