The best new beer I tried in October:

2XJuice Jolt, by Southern Tier

A juicy IPA that's absolutely loaded with juice. A combination of tangerine, pineapple, guava, grapefruit. Plenty of hops, too - Mosaic, Citra, Idaho 7, Simcoe, HBC630, Amarillo, CTZ. A lot going on here! And it's all very tasty.

The best new beer I tried in August:

Extra Lush, by Fremont

This was pretty fantastic. It's a triple IPA, apparently - and that means all of the hops, all of the floral and tropical flavors, all of the booziness. All of everything. This is a big, strong, powerful IPA.

The best new beer I tried in August:

Thicket Blend #2, by Side Project

A sour that's brewed with lots and lots of Oregon blackberries. It's delicious. It's sweet, fruity, a little tart, a little funky... and just really, really deeply flavorful. This one was just awesome.

The best new beer I tried in July:

Roach Clip, by Great Notion

Their description calls it a "loud IPA" that's "full of potent citrus and tropical fruit character right up to the last drop," and I think every word of that is earned. This is hoppy and juicy and really full bodied. It's excellent.

The best new beer I tried in June:

Munchies, by Great Notion

This is their "imperial garbage stout," which is a hilarious moniker. It's packing a combination of cacao nibs, peanuts, marshmallows, pretzels, potato chips, caramel, peanut butter cups, and graham crackers. It's pretty outstanding.

The best new beer I tried in May:

Megaplex, by Old Stove

This was a really nice take on the New England-style hazy IPA. There's a rich, fragrant body of El Dorado, Mosaic, and Citra hops; there's a blend of pineapple and pear and tropical fruit in the mix, too. It all comes together really nicely.

The best new beer I tried in April:

Dark Chocolate Peanut Butter Porter, by Hardywood

This was delicious! It's made in collaboration with Trader Joe's, and it's based on TJ's Dark Chocolate Peanut Butter Cups. It's a rich, chocolate-malty porter with plenty of peanut-buttery goodness in the mix.

The best new beer I tried in March:

Woodworker: Crooked Path, by Baerlic

This is a barrel-aged imperial stout that's brewed with coconut and vanilla, and it's really nice. It's full bodied, plenty boozy, and it doesn't overdo it with the coconut. Just a really good, strong imperial stout.

If you look at how the story is covered internationally, the headline is - obviously! - that the U.S. government murdered 53 people.

The best new beer I tried in February:

Bourbon Barrel Aged Hazelnut Porter, by Pfriem

Whooo, boy. It's a hazelnut porter that's aged in bourbon casks for 10+ months, and that most certainly does it good. What you get is a deep, richly flavorful hazelnut beer that's oaky and boozy and full-bodied.

The best new beer I tried in January:

Vanilla Triple Dog, by Abita

This is the next evolution of their Turbodog brown ale - a "robust dark ale" that's every bit as robust as promised. It's got a generous helping of caramel and chocolate malts, a nice splash of vanilla, and lots of booziness. Yum.

The best new beer I tried in December:

Santa's Private Reserve 2024, by Rogue

Perhaps my favorite of their Santa beers yet. Brewed by mixing coffee beans into a stout as it's barrel-aging, then blending it with a chocolate stout to make "mocha stout." Ummmm, yes! I am here for this!

The best new beer I tried in November:

Crypt-Kicker Five, by No Boat

This is an ambitious one! It's an imperial pumpkin cappuccino stout, brewed with a half pound of organic pumpkin puree and one whole pumpkin pie (!!) per barrel. The result is... pretty good!

The best new beer I tried in October:

Affogato World Wide Stout, by Dogfish Head

I was already a fan of their World Wide Stout before, but this version is next-level. They load this one up with so much espresso and vanilla and sweetness, it makes an all-time great beer even greater. Iconic.

The best new beer I tried in September:

Seedless, by Great Notion

It's a gose that's brewed with watermelon and dragonfruit! It's sweet and candylike - almost like you're enjoying a watermelon Jolly Rancher. But it's not quite at the point of being cloyingly, overly sweet - it's just right.

The best new beer I tried in August:

Queen of Persica, by Ferment

This was a really nice peach sour. It's a little bit on the subtle side - rather than being overwhelmingly peachy or overwhelmingly tart, it's got a nice little splash of each. You get a big glass of happy peachy vibes. I love that.

The best new beer I tried in July:

Trail Hazard, by La Cumbre

The highlight of my recent trip to New Mexico. It's a New England-style hazy imperial IPA, and it's big and bold and hoppy. It's flavorful without being excessively bitter, which I really appreciate. Super good.

I really liked this Harris endorsement from @thenation.com - especially because the author makes an effort to connect the stakes of the election to actual issues that make a difference in people's lives.

Far too much political coverage lacks this sort of analysis.
