a screenshot of my digital workspace, with my reference, a screen cap from PATERSON, on the left and my canvas on the right. After 3-ish hours I've got a background that might get simplified and a silhouette that I'm gradually making more complicated. I've roughed in his right shoulder and coat collar, and am working my way up his right side, rendering details of his neck, ear, and hair as I go, but I've only made it maybe two-thirds of the way up his head so far. The rest of him is blank blackness.

But as he leans over his desk, stabbing at her pages with his red Pentel, telling her how he thought she had a singular voice when he'd signed her, complaining around his Marlboro that he hopes she has a clear afternoon to go through his notes, even as she frowns back, arguing for her semicolons and reaching for his lighter -- maybe he's wrong about her talent, because isn't it terribly cliche, how much she likes it all?
