Math teacher. Mom. Runner. Believer of little stones causing big ripples. NoCo transplant.
Everything is crumbling and I’m giving two meaningless state tests today.

Any recs (especially from educators) on parenting a toddler? What does “discipline” look like at this age? My 2.5 year old is an amazing little nugget who has only recently become a boundary tester. I grew up with some fear of my parents, despite them being pretty “gentle” for 90’s parenting.

Flying from Denver to Cleveland means the small talk revolves only around how no one will see the sun until we return to Colorado.

Trying to include my toddler in the chores. Takes three times as long. Luigi has gone for a swim in my coffee cup. It’s only 9:18 AM.

Who among us hasn’t returned to a brewery because a Princess Peach action figure was left behind?

being a mom and am amateur, middle of the pack ultrarunner means my post long run meal is abandoned in the kitchen while i hold a sleepy toddler back to sleep. My stomach is growling but my heart is full.

On the darkest day of the year, I’m trail running with friends I didn’t know a year ago, taking my daughter on a hike, where she will run when she could hardly walk a year ago, and watching Doctor Who’s “A Christmas Carol” (that happens every year.) Halfway out of the dark.

This is tremendous news. I can’t tell you how many second-career teachers I know whose lives are improved by this. And there are so many other public sector workers and their spouses in other kinds of situations who will now have more secure retirements.
In Vote that Will Change Many Teachers’ Lives, Senate Repeals WEP/GPO
In what many teachers are calling the best holiday gift they could receive, the U.S. Senate has voted 76 to 20 to finally put an end to the Windfall Elimination Provision and Government Pension Offset...

Last day of semester 1 in school #4. And what I can’t get over is how many “schools should” or “teachers should” when the 5 schools i’ve worked at had incredibly different student populations and needs.

“But Emma, don’t you miss being near family, especially with a kid?” Yes. I do. But I won’t teach in schools where teachers carry guns, I won’t out a kid to their parent, and I don’t think they should get to leave art class to go to Bible study.

Acting. 2 semesters. Improv prepared me for teaching more than any education class. (I’m incredibly grateful to have attended a liberal arts school- taking graph theory in the morning and civil liberties in the afternoon was the dream.)

I see AI and the privatization and dismantling of public education, esp in my home state and it’s enough to make me wonder if I need to pivot career paths. And i’m a diehard educator.

This is literally true.

School vouchers were pioneered as a way to help white supremacists send their kids to a new wave of private "segregation academies" created expressly for the purpose.

Every fellow teacher I ran into today was just…so….done. They’re AMAZING teachers. You’d love for your kids to be in their class. But they’re (we’re?) so burned out. December is hard.

My husband and I are considering buying (or leasing?) an EV before the end of the year. My 2012 Honda Civic has been trusty, but needs some work and I’m thinking lots of EV incentives will disappear soon. Anyone have any advice? Love their EV? Looking at Nissan Leafs or similar.

I have little pangs to leave the classroom sometimes, even though I love my job. This is why. I’m so tired of just getting through the day to day instead of building something meaningful and joyful that requires time. Time that I’m no longer willing to sacrifice my evenings and weekends to have.
Something people rarely talk about:

US Teachers have too much face-to-face time in front of students.

In fact, the US has among the highest rates of teacher-to-student face time in the world. It doesn't give teachers enough time to plan, grade, or assess well.

We're doing the most.
What I don't understand is how the United States spends 154 hours on math instruction each year, 20hrs more than the international avg, & 40hrs more than high scoring EU countries like Finland & England. In fact, you'd think there was an inverse correlation between instructional time and outcome. 😵‍💫

Cocoa and buttered toast. Every red-faced snowball fight and sledding adventure from my childhood ended with this. My mom told me her mom made the same for her.

(there’s no snow here…yet.)

I spent my honeymoon at the Doctor Who experience. My husband didn’t know the NBA finals was more than a single game and we have a room almost solely dedicated to Legos. Just try…not being creepy.
I think this is true and what’s crazy is it doesn’t have to be, the Male Doomer Industry is cooking people’s brains. I’m a bald hobbit and I’m married with two kids, you can find a partner if you stop being a freak bsky.app/profile/thac...
One of these days we're really going to be truthful about how this entire cultural/political moment is about men with no game being mad that women have better option than them...one of those options being "happy and alone."

Exponent rules in Alg1- such a FUN topic. I *hate* that our text and many curricula just do “make the problems more complicated!” instead of asking for richer problems. Any fun tasks out there for day 2? #ITeachMath
