I understand it's secondary, but it is hard for faculty to be both "too powerful" and "too romantic about their role in society." I can only really read those two statements as being at odds.

It's easy to laugh at that sentiment, but I'm pretty sure we all do it. It's boring to read Whitman again and again, but for the students it might be the first time! etc.

I listened to the Sold a Story podcast this Fall. I can't stop thinking about something the anti-phonics teachers said, which was basically that teaching phonics is boring, so it cannot be engaging for students. It's boring, of course, because we know how to read. It's mind-bending for students.
