the sea advances insensibly in silence, nothing seems to happen, nothing moves, the water is so far off you hardly hear it.. yet it finally surrounds the resistant substance.

One Ring to find them,
One Ring to bring them all and in the darkness bind them

So, El Fasher looks like one of the worst single event atrocities to happen this century so far, but the evidence has come in such a trickle it seems to only now be getting verified
At least 60,000 murdered in Sudanese city, which resembles ‘a slaughterhouse’
Satellite evidence shows extent of paramilitary massacre in El Fasher

Mathify Wrapped:

You spent....
• 70 hours thinking about new projects instead of completing old ones
• 42 hours gleefully deluded by an incorrect proof
• 30 hours assuming the wrong hypothesis
• 9 hours thinking about statements that ended up being equivalent to the Yoneda lemma

reading Eisenbud's Commutative Algebra is genuinely so pleasant that I feel like if I had discovered it at an earlier time in my life, I would've been much more inclined towards algebra

I honestly do so much math on WhatsApp. Overleaf I associate with misery, Discord likewise. Yet I love talking to my friends about math on WhatsApp... If every messaging service had inline LaTeX society would revolutionize... just imagine....

I get it, I get it, I get it, I see all the ways it is good, the many worked examples, the great intuition, conversational flavour, blah blah blah---I fucking hate Hatcher's Algebraic Topology

Do I make shit up about myself? Very well then I make shit up about myself (I am large, I contain multitudes.)

reading this paper on the Poisson zoo and I love my field so much. I love thinking about lattice animals and random walks and factor of iid processes. I love probability, the tools, the language, the objects studied and how we study them

Summaring the problems in every maths department.
I think the belief by the powerful that "people will put up with many things if you are excellent at math" is incredibly revealing in terms of understanding How We Got Here

Okay this is embarrasing but I as a semi-mature probabilist only recently realized that the event {S_n = 0 infinitely often} is not in the tail sigma algebra (where S_n denotes a simple random walk, idk S_n = X_1 + ... + X_n for X_i iid centred e.g.). It is still in the exchangeable algebra though!

I can't tell if I love or hate the terminology of going up and going down. On the one hand, extremely transparent name for a property. On the other hand, asking "Does this ring hom satisfy going up?" sounds mildly ungrammatical to me
