I think there's also a technological path dependency with striking versus casting- struck designs seemed to focus on the center more than the edges due to limited quality control and wear, which means center holes possibly require first moving to edge-centered designs...

A lot of it seems path dependent on Chinese currency standardizing on base metal alloys and Persian/Greek/Roman currency using precious metal currency as preferred and base metal alloys for the low-value coins only.

(Of course, another mechanism might well be that there are ripple effects going on with how many people go on to college and the shifts with the makeup of new primary and secondary school teachers, which worked their way through the system long-term...)

I think the biggest question here is why now? The slump predates the pandemic slightly, so although it would make sense for functionally illiterate children to have markedly worse ability to fake it after the pandemic education situation and a period without reinforcement... is that all it is?
