Having to go on 60 Minutes to defend the concept of public funding for scientific research is WILD.

Publicly-funded science has been THE most successful thing produced in the US for 50+ years.

Like, what next: are we going to have to go on television to plead for the value of literacy & numeracy?
“We are doing a service for the United States because they’ve identified needs that need to be met,” says Harvard bioengineer Don Ingber, defending federal grants and contracts to universities for scientific and medical research. cbsn.ws/4hRoEiJ

Truth. This has been driving me nuts for 25 years, since failson Shrub coasted to victory on being the "share a beer with" guy and so-called progressives started parroting "both parties are the same and we're going to teach them a lesson by not voting"
Its a certain demographic who needed to be "motivated off their couches" to vote. Who "need fighters." Or need "excitement"/ someone they can "share a beer with." Politics is not your personal soap opera or wrestling match. And your lack of political enthusiasm without a side show causes real harm!

SNAP is a political football, but making sure the USA ate used to be a national security issue: "up to a quarter of draftees called up via the Selective Service Act of 1940 were malnourished and unfit to serve"

Today, we can't even see feeding people as being in the national interest.

We've been hearing this tired Reagan-era talking point for 45 years: "I don't want to pay for some undeserving stranger's insurance!"

You already are, bro. That's how private insurance works, too--you just pay a lot more and get a lot less with the private version.
Comer: "This is a fake economy. You can't have 1/3 of America receiving some type of free government healthcare and then have another 1/3 that's getting a subsidized rate. That falls on the final 1/3 that's having to pay increased premiums."

fraud is when you drive safely & never claim on your auto insurance
Remember that insurance is actually a thing you hope never to use, and then read this critique.

New Hampshire: "Live free and spineless."
Shaheen: "All those people who oppose this agreement -- staying in a shutdown mode was not getting us anywhere. They need to train their fire on the people who are responsible. That's Trump, Johnson, & the Republicans who have blocked every attempt to get healthcare. We need to be working together."

Q: What does elite class solidarity look like?

A: It looks like a billionaire sports team owner considering naming his team's stadium after a billionaire politician who was just booed for two straight minutes at said stadium.

I assume none of the denafizication experts from postwar Germany are still around, and de-Baathification was a fiasco, but surely there are some central Europeans with experience at tearing down Lenin statues still around who can advise the US at some point in the future.

There is a body under each of these crosses. These American service men gave their lives to save Europe from itself. Now the American government desecrates their memory. It is very painful.

Imagine an EU-wide government shut down in its 6th week leading to serious disruption of air traffic. We would not hear the end of it in Anglophone media.
Look forward to more grand declations about how Europeans must emulate an America whose government is in the sixth week of shutdown and now can't provide safe air travel

If we want to stop the kidnappings and these agents require anonymity to commit these actions, then we must remove the masks.

So long as we allow masked law enforcement to terrorize people, we cannot be a democracy.
I’ve come to believe that we need to gather considerable forces and a campaign to demand the removal of face masks by ICE, Border Patrol, FBI and police.

It is a practice in conflict with the principles of transparency & accountability that are central to the concept of democracy.
Video on social media shows an immigration agent pulling a gun in Little Village and holding it to the side — which is not an appropriate or safe way to hold a gun. (Among other issues.)

It's genuinely weird how words like "ambitious" and "aggressive"--terms of high praise for men!--are used BY women to discipline and punish other women for success in paid work.

When a woman calls other women "ambitious" and "aggressive," it means she's out of bounds on gender norms: "unnatural."

What would happen if there were X and TikTok accounts dedicated to posting AI-generated videos of Abu Ghraib style torture?

This is terrorism. It's organized and institutionalized globally.

But because it's directed against women, it's trivialized, marginalized as sexual rather than political.
