Fatima should be in Wendell, cooking, eating, and laughing with family. Instead she’s spending the holiday in a detention center, where she doesn’t belong, and her family fears they may never see her again.

But instead of fixing the problem, this administration is taking a heavy-handed, punitive approach to immigration enforcement—targeting people based on the color of their skin and their birthplace.

It has taken almost a decade for her case to be adjudicated. That just shows how broken our immigration system is. It takes far too long to do things the right way.

She came to Wendell to live with family after those horrible circumstances, and she has been seeking asylum ever since.

She has no home to return to in Honduras—a place she hasn’t lived since she was 14, after her dad was murdered by a gang and her mom died of cancer.

Instead they arrested her, shipped her to a notorious detention facility in Georgia, and are trying to deport her. Why deport someone with an active asylum case who has been a productive, law-abiding member of our society?

Fatima has a valid federal work permit but didn't have it on her when CBP raided her work site. They could have required her to produce her permit in civil court later and allowed her to remain here.

And I'm sorry more of these folks couldn't get elected but we'll find a place for their service. And yours. There are only so many seats on the town board but it takes all of us to move Wendell forward.
