#MeToo was a necessary and overdue reckoning. Sexual violence against women and girls continues to be rampant. So we still need to talk about it. Women will not forget. And we’re not going back to silence and shame.
It's in the fucking name. That it happens to so many of us that it's never just the one person who is harmed.

It's me, too.

Larry Summers still teaches at Harvard. Imagine what it feels like to be a woman walking into this guy's classroom after reading those Epstein emails.

Keep coming back to Summers’ annoyance that this female mentee he’s trying to sleep with “takes her presentation very seriously.” To men like this—to a lot of men—women’s intellectual or professional ambition is an irritating presumption that they condescend to tolerate.
The emails have Summers reporting to Epstein about his attempts to date a Harvard economics student & to hit on her during a seminar she was giving.

I don’t think women’s professional ambitions should be limited by how tactfully or gamely they respond to men’s sexual entitlement.

If women are underrepresented in STEM, it's at least partly because men like this offer mentoring, then embarrass themselves by assuming their mentees must be into them, then decide the best solution is to cut ties, which sends the signal to other faculty that the mentee must not be good enough.

In keeping with the theme of the University of Minnesota walking out of negotiations: yesterday the graduate labor union at the U filed a petition with the state to finally get the University to follow the law. Explainer below, tl;dr press release here: umnglu.org/wp-content/u...

This shell game has gotten worse and worse in higher education. They assign job duties to a title that, three decades ago, didn’t have job duties, and try to pretend they’re not ducking labor law. Shameful.
The work fellows and RAs do is often identical. Faculty certainly don't treat us differently or even keep track of who is what. I am a graduate fellow but have seamlessly changed semester to semester from fellow to RA and back. I do the same things no matter which title I happen to have.

Yes! We’re Minnesota. We’re supposed to be setting the national standard for civic life and good governance. The university is violating the public trust.
This is a labor rights thing, but EVEN IF YOU DON'T SUPPORT GRAD UNIONS, THIS MATTERS. The U is BREAKING THE LAW.
This law says that graduate fellows are in the same union bargaining unit as teaching (TAs) and research assistants (RAs).
