At York we've got a small but growing number of academics working on AI and philosophy. We also have a pretty good-looking MA programme (www.york.ac.uk/study/postgr...) They're mostly in the Philosophy dept (whereas I'm in Politics & IR) so don't know the details I'm afraid!

But most of us move to access opportunities, to find love, to be with people we care about, to make a fuckload of money and retire early, whatever. To make our welcome conditional on our supposed desire to contribute to the flourishing of a community we're not fully meant to be a part of is gross

It's not the biggest problem with this rhetoric at all but it is so disrespectful even to the people that they will graciously allow to live among them. Maybe some entrepreneur somewhere wants to move to the UK bc they want their taxes to be spent on endlessly unsuccessful attempts to fix potholes

If conservatives were for real, if they actually believed in the stuff their intelligentsia quote from Burke and Oakshotte, I actually think they'd specifically hate this. But alas far too often it's just a thin veneer of intellectualism over instinctive hates and bigotries, so here we are.

Not a man, but I do think about the roman empire constantly! In my case, it sometimes includes the early Byzantine empire, but mostly like their cool mosaics.

Just butting in to say that "It made my brain smoother in precisely the way I had hoped I would" is great and I'm going to be using it a lot from now. Sometimes we just want some nice brain smoothening entertainment!

I apologise for doing accidental misinformation on the internet, but that was of course meant to say you can get ~6 months for illegal but not "seriously annoying" protests (e.g. the police tells you stop and you don't). You can still protest in the UK (for now)
