Here's what's next in the fight to curb climate change, now that talks in Brazil have ended
Experts have mixed reactions to the recent U.N. climate talks in the Amazon. The talks, known as COP30, ended without a clear plan to phase out fossil fuels. U.N.

"a faltering, inadequate step, and one that will barely interrupt the climate’s steady march towards catastrophe. But a significant departure from total inaction nonetheless."

That's great, but to be clear, "inadequate" here means "not good enough to save humanity for even another generation"

No one should be surprised when a planet that accumulates heat more than twice as fast starts to see temperatures go up more than twice as fast.

This isn't rocket science, but we do need more of these NASA satellites. 🌍🛰

To keep us from going blind.

This is a big deal. The reduction in sulphur emissions from ships means clouds aren’t as reflective and persistent, so the warming from greenhouse gases is not offset as much. So, while this change is very good for air quality, it’s very bad for almost everything else. #climate
A second opportunity to examine the cloud reduction effects from shipping fuel pollution measures has revealed that the 80% cut in sulphur emissions reduces cloud droplet formation by 67%.

Now that we are likely to cross 1.5°C, there is increasing discussion on "overshoot".

There is a lot of uncertainties on overshoot, but there is one thing that we are 100% sure about:

GHG emissions need to go down >90% in decades for overshoot to be a reality.

There is no way to achieve "deep, rapid and sustained reductions in global greenhouse gas emissions" without a rapid transition away from fossil fuel burning. The international scientific assessments are very clear on this point. One could view a focus on other sources as intentional deflection.

I'm seeing claims that progress was made at #COP30, but it really wasn't. Each passing year with no fossil fuel phaseout comes at great opportunity cost as we further burn through the vanishing carbon budget that remains for averting dangerous warming. See my commentary: michaelmann.net/bad-cop/

Since the 1990s, glaciers around the world have been losing ice faster than they can recover, and the pace is only accelerating.

In 2024, glaciers in Scandinavia, Svalbard, and North Asia recorded their largest annual mass loss ever observed.

Reminder that no insurance means ... no mortgage. No mortgages, and ... well you can imagine what that does for housing/business/economy in general. Insurance will be the climate shock that breaks things, probably. 💣💥
"Climate shock." New study shows that rising property insurance premiums caused by growing weather extremes are cascading into the real estate market. Homes in the ZIP codes most exposed to hurricanes and wildfires would sell for an average of $43,900 less than they would otherwise.

Evidence-based journalism? Why is there no mention of #methane in this article? Methane is a powerful greenhouse gas as harmful as CO2. Meat and dairy consumption has to go down too if we want a liveable planet. But that's an inconvenient truth.
