When I watched these segments as a child, I had no idea that they were preparing me for a career in #academia #research #linguistics. I have so much empathy for Don Music's creative struggles. Also, I just realized where my headaches come from. #SesameStreetIsLife

Standardized varieties of a language are not inherently better than other varieties.

Looking back at #NWAV52 --the great papers, the lively conversations, and that moment, 2 slides in, when I realized I'd uploaded the wrong version of my presentation. Thanks for hanging in there with me, folks! Looking forward to the next one!

Just saw an email from a student asking if I meant to post the answers to the midterm exam. WHAT?? After a panicky check of files and a second read of the message, I realized that she saw "answer SHEET" and thought it was a key. She was being honest, but it will take an hour to get my ❤️ rate down

Last night I had a nightmare about high school in which I said, "I still have nightmares about high school. Why is that?" And now I'm asking, why is that?

What are your favorite studies related to teen language and identity? I'm finalizing a reading list for a capstone class, and I'm sure there is some great work that I'm missing. I'm also interested in project ideas if you've tried something you really like. (Feel free to share--my network is small)

Is there a contact list for #nwav51 participants? I need to find email addresses for a couple of presenters. (Forgot to get them from the name tags or slides. Whoops!)

Preview of the latest film in the Talking Black series at #nwav51. It will be a great resource for teaching about social justice. I wish it could use it in my classes now!

Amazing talk by Wassink (et al) about operationalizing race and ethnicity in our work. Can’t wait to read the whole paper. Here’s a summary of some of their recommendations for various different types of research:
