Just another cat on the internet. I chew wires, fix things, and spend way too much time thinking about computers, airplanes, old cars, and safety. No, I’m not from Iceland, I just love the name.
For whatever reason, several households in my area seem to have Halloween priapism: the bony skeletons they erected are still standing at attention.

Hey @margaret.bsky.social and @iwriteok.bsky.social: if you are fascinated by inertial ICBM guidance and in a mood to nerd out, may I recommend Donald MacKenzie’s Inventing Accuracy: A Historical Sociology of Nuclear Missile Guidance. Beryllium babies, oh my!

LLMs will continue to be used for customer disservice and by scammers, but the big future use is democracy prevention: flooding info. spaces with so much crap that none of us has the information we need to act as full citizens. LLMs will be used by the powerful to reduce us all to passive subjects.

My employer, Dartmouth College, today boasts it's 1st Ivy "to launch AI at an institutional scale." It is doing this by partnering--"more than a collaboration"--with Anthropic, a company that stole the books of many faculty, me included, which many of us are suing.

This is what is going to happen. There will be a thin top layer of non-digital universities — and all the tech billionaires will send their kids to those places.
Total success to the first college/university that pledges to be AI-free and brand it as an opportunity to receive a real education.

An AI pusher is now running an ad in which some idiot holds up a 3.6 kg ham and has to ask his phone whether it will feed 8 people. The phone assures him it will feed 8–10.

Who needs an AI to tell them that an average guest is not going to eat 400+ g of ham plus sides etc. in one sitting?!?

Y’know, one way to encourage motorists to choose smaller cars is to impose a mass limit—say, 1.5 tons for a two passenger car and 2 tons for a 4–6 passenger car—and require automatic speed limit enforcement built in to everything heavier sold.

I want to make a comment on this: two TAs graded the paper, one cis, one trans. They agreed on the grade and the reasons. Based on OU’s press release, they have only suspended one of these TAs.

For my newsletter, I wrote about that college essay scandal that's gone viral and what everyone is seeming to miss:

It's about ATTACKING TRANS PEOPLE!!!

That Viral Essay Scandal is (SURPRISE!) Actually About Trans People
A shoddy Oklahoma University essay went viral. Cis people think this is about conservatives whining for better grades. Trans people see a planned attack on a trans academic. (Note for free subscriber...

I spent most of his first term wondering when he was going to ring up General Shaed E. Mercke’s black helicopter service for a ride out of the country. Now I’m not sure he’s got the sense to git while the gittin’s good.
Grampa is not happy with how things are going for him, I gather.

What payment would you accept to give up your right to play sport? To be excluded from a dorm? To be denied healthcare that demonstrably and markedly improves quality of life?

That’s what the people making these decisions owe to those affected.

The gaslighting NU is doing is insane. They “place no restrictions on” trans people—as they restrict us. They “unequivocally support” us—as they deny us our human rights. That’s university “leadership” that must never be allowed to make another consequential decision.
"The agreement places no restrictions on our transgender community."

Except whether they can play sports, where they can use the bathroom or locker room, what kind of housing they can live in, and what healthcare they can receive.

Not a single major news outlet has covered this story. There is such a blatant, obvious attempt to suppress any and all news that deals with the actual facts about transgender life and experience. As the government rolls back our rights on an unprecedented scale, we have been left out to dry.
"[G]ender-affirming care saves lives."

"Suicidality scores among the [study's] patients who provided responses dropped by over 67 percent."

"[O]f the hundreds of patients who started hormone therapy, only seven discontinued their treatment."
