Speaking as someone who grew up on the poor end of a rich conservative suburb in South Carolina? Dead on. Were there racist redneck types? Yes. It’s South Carolina. But the worst bigots and bullies were in boat shoes and khakis with braided leather belts.
By far the worst anti-queer violence I faced growing up wasn't from working class locals, though bigots certainly existed there, it was from spoiled suburban kids whose parents commuted to corpo jobs and loved Pat Buchanan (and Robertson and Falwell...)
