They are playing Dungeons and Dragons, and the deer just attempted to roll a willpower roll to break free of the snake’s hypnosis in-game, since he’s been taking advantage of him in game by repeatedly hypnotizing him. The roll has succeeded, but the snake has decided to replicate the game in real life to convince him that he actually failed. The snake is saying: “No line between what you're told and what you are. Just as suggestible and obedient as your character. When you wake, you'll look at that die and see a 1, not a 20. Which means you lose the willpower save, and get hypnotized by me, again. Losing to me, as you always do.”
