Great thread, as always. But like many discussions, it does not distinguish between (1) executive and legislative power and (2) AfD party and its voters. What's the core problem for the CDU/CSU? It is the median party in parliament, but cannot capitalize on this position due to the Brandmauer+
Some thoughts on the strategic rationale behind the "Brandmauer” – the cordon sanitaire vis-à-vis the AfD – and the challenges associated with maintaining it. Seems pertinent, given that senior CDU/CSU figures regularly float the idea of ditching it and exploring avenues for closer cooperation.

Continuing to read on psychoanalysis of fascism.
Why was/is fascism so attractive to many?
Paraphrasing Freud: It is very liberating! For 2 reasons:
1) Casting off restrictions of ego on the id.
2) Delegate responsibility for decision-making to father figure.

This line of thought, in addition to having zero merit on the substance, objectively advances Putin's agenda of turning European people against the European Union.

Null Respekt für alle, die hier die journalistische Verantwortung tragen. Was für eine Bankrotterklärung.

To all the analysts jumping on here to warn about tomorrow, Syrians are ten steps ahead of you.

Have some basic human empathy and let those celebrating the release of the unjustly detained, the reuniting of families, the hopes of return, and the end of a brutal regime do so in peace.

+ one from Brazil. One of my students found that oil/gas workers have the highest levels of education, wind and solar next - and with biofuels workers at the bottom. There are hundreds of thousands of biofuels workers (seasonal agriculture), so the IRENA "RE jobs" #s there are not what people think.

I try not to talk (and think) about the US election, but I'd like to know the history of the arrow map. It is brillant, it works so well and I would never have thought about it. I find traces of it all the way back to 2016, but maybe it's older. Who came up wit this? Any idea?

Industrial policy is a generational project and the factories funded with these policies aren't even up and running yet. It takes about 8 quarters from breaking ground to production. So I think IRA/CHIPS were not good electoral projects but that doesn't mean they'll be failed policies.
Has anyone seen a quick and dirty analysis of whether the massive investments catalyzed by the IRA and CHIPS Acts in domestic manufacturing affected the election at all?

Just eyeballing the electoral map, the answer would appear to be no.

Aka why tariffs are a bad idea for prices, consumers, and democracy
Two things shouldn't be forgotten amidst the whole "tariffs frenzy" -- some of which is undoubtedly justified.
1. Trade liberalisation makes consumers better off by, inter alia, lowering prices (greater product variety also matters). The paper below documents this impressively, showing
