I took 2 years of drafting, and it became foundational to my career. Not that I draft on paper anymore, but the principles of centering, leveling, perspective, adding descriptive dimensions, scale, all stood me in good stead during the desktop publishing revolution in the early 90’s.

I mention the Colonel (later General) because my grandfather still had his sword, uniform & hat with the bullet hole in it. We are hard-headed motherfuckers.

There was a colonel on the Union side named Michael J Vreeland who was wounded at Gettysburg- I believe my great-great-great-grandfather? My granny traced the family back from Oregon to Michigan to Pennsylvania to New Jersey to New Amsterdam. So you and I are probably 9th cousins or something. 👋🏼🙂

I was in the room when his manager came to tell him his first album had just gone gold. When they were on ACL, he brought a little TV and gathered everyone in the building to watch. Must have been 30 people sitting on the floor of his room he kept elbowing me & saying “Look! We’re on TV!”

I was on unemployment after a restaurant went out of business & a friend hired me under the table to work at the rehearsal hall he owned. Stevie had locked out a room to rehearse his 2nd album before recording. Saw him nearly every night & he was a kind, friendly, humble person.

I’ve held that guitar in my hands. I was plunking at my bass trying to figure out slap & pluck- he walked by, stopped & said “I’ve seen some cats do it like this,” reached over and re-positioned my right hand for me. It worked! This whole town just shut down the day he died. Nobody could function.

Albini was such a great writer. His words about the biz and how properly to record a band meant more to me than his music. He had an ethos that was in alignment with mine about a lot of things & he could spell it out way better than me. I’ve worked with Edith Frost a bit and it really walloped her.

I knew Stevie, & worked with a bunch of musicians that had known him also. When the news came hit about 9:30 am, we just shut the print shop down and went home. The boss didn’t say shit. Sitting in my dark studio an hour later was the first time I heard Riviera Paradise, & and I cried hard.

Yeah Bowie was when the fabric of the universe began to unravel, but one that hit me really hard was Matthew Seligman, Thomas Dolby’s bass player. When he wasn’t touring, he was a human rights lawyer and a damn fine human being. He was way too young as well. Huge influence on my playing career.
