Legal status doesn’t matter: if you exceed ICE’s melanin threshold, you get snatched. It is ethnic cleansing. There is no other word for it.

The news has shown you video of these often violent detentions. What you don’t see is what happens to these individuals after.

I’ve had a front row seat.

(And let me note that immigration law FAVORS such horrific outcomes. Asylum is very hard to win. Immigration “court” isn’t a real court. It’s a kangaroo court where DHS is judge, jury, and executioner. You have no right to counsel. And the law tilts against non-citizens all conceivable ways.)

I don’t really know what I expect in posting this, but maybe some people see it and can learn from it.

I’ll call it “lessons from an unwilling immigration attorney.”

Little boys beating people up for other little boys’ approval.
For @msnownews.bsky.social, I wrote an article about how ICE Watch is grounded in sociological theories of violence prevention.

The reality is that most men will only commit public violence in extremely specific scenarios and ICE Watch disrupts the conditions necessary for escalation.
Opinion | I'm a Minneapolis sociologist who studies violence. Here's how ICE observers are helping.
Research into how violence occurs shows that disapproval from the people around you can help reduce it.

There’s two paths ahead of us: one way offers things like high quality, free cradle to college education, free and fast transit, and social housing. The other is crumbling infrastructure and oil wars. I choose the first path and I’ll bet you do, too. But we need to organize a mass movement for it.

Waking up to the news that the US has bombed Venezuela, kidnapped its president, and will now seek to decide its fate (i.e. “liberate” its natural resources). We don’t have money for basic infrastructure in our local communities, but we can always start new wars? Absolutely sickening.

Yes, we need behavioral health and workforce resources. But people can't recover from addiction if they don't have a home. People can't get a job if they don't have a home. And there are many people who can’t work because of disability, age, or other challenges.

People can't recover from addiction if they don't have a home. People can't get a job if they don't have a home. And a focus on getting people to work is misplaced when we know that seniors are one of the fastest growing groups in our homeless population.

The Morillo amendment does a lot more than just address sweeps but that’s become the focus. Let me clear: sweeps will not save our city, and citations will not magically house the thousands of people sleeping on our streets.

In the week since Mayor Wilson began enforcing the public camping ban, we are seeing MORE tents in East Portland. Those folks are just being swept into my district.

I told the mayor that this is what would happen and asked him to bring extra resources to East PDX to meet the displaced. He did not.

Our amendment doesn’t cut those things.

Mayor Wilson could’ve called me to clarify and ask questions before blasting us in a newsletter, but of course he has to find a scapegoat when he doesn’t magically end homelessness on 12/1 by warehousing people.

Looking forward to clarifying this tomorrow.

Hey @legaleagle.tv! There’s been some talk here in Portland that Governor Kotek could have called up the OR National Guard *before* Trump did in order to protect our city from ICE and possibly the military. Would that have been legal? What happens when the state conflicts with the feds?

Almost transed myself at DMV today.

Despite the near miss, I’m glad Oregon makes it so easy to change the gender on your ID!
