Mistake too many make is to imagine fascism as static. It’s barely an ideology; it’s definitely not stable. It’s not enough to say, “yeah I already knew they were bad.” This speech in this context means tomorrow is more dangerous than yesterday.

People are rightly disgusted by this speech, but it’s a measure of fascism’s normalization that many see this as more of the awful same rather than what I think most of us who’ve been reporting this beat hear it as: a significant calculated escalation. Full alert stuff.

OPINION: "There is reason to believe that diagnoses are given just as flippantly and immovably as this doctor’s prognosis was delivered. For African Americans, the diagnosis and subsequent overuse of antipsychotics is a longstanding inequity," Jacquese Armstrong writes.

I hear a lot of disgust for many older democratic elected officials and calls for primaries and challenges. First I was suspicious but as a 77 yo voter I have to agree. If a candidate isn’t working for the people they should leave by any means necessary.

"AI-enhanced"? Enhanced racism.
When “AI-enhanced pathology diagnostic systems” were presented with radiology results, they tended to identify demographic information from the images then use those demographics as the basis of diagnosis. Leading to errors in 1/3 of diagnoses for Black patients.

"Reading demographics from a pathology slide is thought of as a 'mission impossible' for a human pathologist, so the bias in pathology AI was a surprise to us."

I had not been notified that we've reached the stage of history where the fascists don't have to be caught by surprise by a punch, but rather just walk right into a ring and volunteer themselves to be punched.

This month, OpenAI announced "up to $2 million" in funding for research on AI safety and well-being. This may seem generous, write J. Nathan Matias and Avriel Epps, but following in the footsteps of other tech giants facing scrutiny over mental health impacts, it's nothing more than grantwashing.

This is the best argument for wealth caps. There are levels of individual wealth and power that are fundamentally incompatible with democracy and broadly-enjoyed human freedom.
In our book, @kateconger.com and I argued that Musk knows he is too big to fail.

There is nothing that can hold him or his wealth accountable. His enormous wealth allows him to buy whole companies or boost political candidates on a whim. And that will become even more apparent in coming years.

Can’t stop thinking about this. The Trump administration is essentially extorting hospitals into dropping gender-affirming care—without Medicare or Medicaid they’d go bankrupt. It’s akin to a backdoor ban even for people with private insurance, a proposal that wouldn’t pass Congress.
Under the proposed rule issued by the Trump Administration today, any Medicare- or Medicaid-participating hospital would be barred from providing gender-affirming care to *any child*, even if the care is not paid for by Medicare or Medicaid.
