My partner is American & this is his first Thanksgiving away from home in years.

Almost finished my first attempt at a (somewhat) more realistic embroidery, a gift for a friend of my dad’s based on a photograph. Lots to learn about thread painting and perspective but pretty pleased with how this is turning out. Almost done! #WIPWednesday 🧵🪡

If she had gone out that way, at least she’d have kicked it in a place she loved. Dervla Murphy was obsessed with blackberries and her feet were always purple in September from stepping in the juice of the berries she pecked off the bushes.

One more at close of #Caturday - visited an underground archaeological site beneath the Domplein square in Utrecht & immediately gravitated towards these paw prints on a roof tile from the Roman Empire, circa 45 A.D. Cats been cat-ing for 2000 yrs 🐾

Forgot to post a pic of my Irish cottage on #WIPWednesday so here’s a twofer on #Caturday. Looking forward to posting this off to my dad before Christmas (the embroidery and maybe the cat as he’s been very bold today).

Climbed to the top of the 14th century Dom Tower in Utrecht and was delighted to catch its carillonneur, Malgosia Fiebig, playing the 50-bell carillon as the sun set over the city. So special.

Went to Europe, saw some Art
An illustrated condom (large) on display in the 19th century room of the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. This almost 200-year-old contraceptive – probably made from a sheep’s appendix – features an erotic etching depicting a nun and three clergymen. Thought to have been a souvenir from a brothel, only two such objects are known to have survived to the present day. It reveals that printing was being used in a wide range of contexts, and provides an insight into sexuality and prostitution in the 19th century. The illustration is barely visible in this picture unless you zoom in. In which case you’ll see a nun seated with her legs apart in front of three clergymen, the nun points her finger at one of them. The men, standing, hold their robes up to display their state of sexual arousal. The inscription Voilà mon choix, meaning ‘This is my choice’, makes the print a parody of both celibacy and the Judgement of Paris from Greek mythology

Visited Rembrandt’s beautiful home & studio this afternoon. Loved the tutorial/history lesson, recreating his colour palette using the materials and techniques of his time. Metal paint tubes (syringes, in fact) weren’t created for another 200ish years in 1840.

Spotted a Shaggy Mane, also known as Lawyer’s Wig, also known as Kristeva’s Abject, on a rainy day ramble in Denmark
