Beautiful winter morning at Portbury Wharf today. The pools weren’t as frozen as last week so more birds on the water and hedgerows were very busy with tits, gold crest, collared doves, redwing etc. reedbuntings and stonechat by north #AvonBirds #PWNR

Bit of excitement took me by surprise today so wasn't ready with camera - a Sparrowhawk caught a Dunlin, tried landing on a harbour wall and dropped it into the sea.

Had time for a quick cycle ride down to the coast this afternoon and was treated to some glimpses of the local Purple Sandpipers. At least five were seen amongst all of the seaweed and rocks.

A nice lifer to end the year - one of the ever elusive Water Rail in the ditches at Portbury Wharf Nature Reserve. Have been hearing them for so long, good to finally see one (well, two were seen today!)

Back after a short Christmas break in Suffolk - different scenery with lots of flat arable farm land and heathland.
Of interest was a huge flock of Lapwing hiding in a stubbly field, which then flew over to a large puddle in a nearby flooded field.

A nice trip to NWT Thetford Heath this afternoon - hundreds of linnets seen, some kestrels, a few white wagtail, and a final lifer for the year - a Fieldfare. Adjacent to the Heath is an old Cold War bomb store with delightful watch towers.

Lots of nice birds seen this year. Some highlights include a close encounter with these Oystercatchers...
Always nice to see Oystercatchers up close instead of far out on the muddy shores. These three were seen at various locations around Portbury Wharf Nature Reserve over the weekend.

Never quite know what to make of the bleak Hallen Marsh Wetlands on the edge of Bristol, but the piles of fly tipping in it always add to the experience.
