Took advantage of some dry weather and cycled over to look for the local Avocets. Sadly couldn't see any, just the usual suspects...

reckon there's maybe 8000 Dunlin in flock, not entirely sure how to count in such massive 3D flocks! At least 517 in the red square; guestimated the yellow numbers based on that.

More from this morning's trip to Clevedon including Ringed Plover, Grey Plover, Knot, and Oystercatchers.
Thanks to @howardtaffs.bsky.social for pointing out the Greys & Knots - probably wouldn't have identified them successfully without the tipoff. Nice to meet you.

Some Dunlin spotted at Clevedon this morning. Photos don't really do the amazing scene justice, several thousand were flocking about.

Some of the waders at Fisherman's Steps today. A rather low 10m high tide meant the birds were quite far out.
Numbers include:
* 20 Turnstone.
* 6 Curlew.
* 1 Oystercatcher.
* 30 Redshank.

A short walk out this afternoon on some random footpaths to the south of Portishead was quite productive - highlights include Stonechat, some Mistle Thrush and a Fieldfare.

Cycle ride from Portishead to Pill this afternoon. Lots of Redwing seen en-route as usual, two Heron were in a random field along Sheepway; and one Curlew & a few Redshank at destination. Sadly didn't notice any Avocets.

Bit of excitement took me by surprise today so wasn't ready with camera - a Sparrowhawk caught a Dunlin, tried landing on a harbour wall and dropped it into the sea.

Had time for a quick cycle ride down to the coast this afternoon and was treated to some glimpses of the local Purple Sandpipers. At least five were seen amongst all of the seaweed and rocks.

A nice lifer to end the year - one of the ever elusive Water Rail in the ditches at Portbury Wharf Nature Reserve. Have been hearing them for so long, good to finally see one (well, two were seen today!)
