We’re more than a year away from midterms and 3+ from the next presidential election (presuming we have them) and I see it’s already “this Democrat doesn’t 100% meet my purity test, therefore they’re no different than Trump” season 🤦🏻‍♂️

This *only* helps Republicans.
Interesting article about the composer David Amram, still going at 95; he has played/collaborated with everyone from Kerouac to Monk to Arthur Miller to Dylan to Willie Nelson to Mingus to Patti Smith (and that’s a partial list).

Day 26. One of New Wave’s most important legacies was the reintroduction of simple, catchy, concise (power)pop songs into rock. This is one of the prime examples.

All of the bands/artists I wish John Cale had produced, even in some cases if just one song…Joy Division, Talking Heads, Wire, Suicide, Magazine, The Birthday Party, Cabaret Voltaire…and he does a track with Charlie XCX. But…it’s quite good.

Day 25 - The Undertones were absolutely everything a band should be; their songs were energetic, fun, catchy, well played but never overplayed, and not a bad or even mediocre song in their entire catalog. Derry’s finest.

Tyson is closing a Nebraska plant that employs 3,200 workers in order to “right-size” its business.

The meatpacking giant paid its CEO $22.7M last year, 525x its median employee's pay.

It also spent $196M in stock buybacks to reward shareholders.

Textbook corporate greed.

When the Trump regime aims to punish members of Congress for reminding the military to refuse illegal orders, it’s a strong indicator that the Trump regime is ISSUING ILLEGAL ORDERS.

Let me sum it up for non-military folks:

Senator Mark Kelly didn’t violate any military laws. None.

Hegseth’s little bitch ass has been ordered by Trump to retaliate against Sen. Kelly for speaking out, and Hegseth does what Daddy tells him to do.

That’s all this is.

Good morning #MetsSky. Here’s a string of connected longtime #Mets;

Brandon Nimmo was a teammate of David Wright, who was a teammate of John Franco, who was a teammate of Darryl Strawberry, who was a teammate of Tom Seaver.

Brandon Nimmo had gotten pretty high up on the “only played for the #Mets” list. Now he’s off that list, which remains led by Ed Kranepool, David Wright and Ron Hodges. #MetsSky #LGM 💙🧡

Day 23. The Jam were perhaps more New Wave-adjacent than an actual New Wave band, but this is one of their songs that would fit. And yeah, the bass line borrows liberally from Taxman.

Twitter pays people based on engagement (views, retweets, comments, etc). It appears that many MAGA accounts are based abroad and they use AI technology to generate low-effort rage bait.

My guess is that this will get worse as AI tech improves. For instance, fake videos of minorities doing crime.

Last Thursday we flew from Newark and returned today, and I think those two days were the most empty I’ve ever seen the place. And this is the weekend before Thanksgiving. I suspect that lots of people changed travel plans not knowing how long the shutdown would last.

Day 22. Yesterday I posted a song by The Nerves and said I’d follow up with a spinoff band. Here are The Plimsouls, led by The Nerves’ Peter Case. This is from 1982, a bit late for New Wave, but kind of fits. And it’s a great song.

#20SongsByYear (1967)

1967 was a great year for music, and while it wasn’t evident at the time (we all know Eno’s quote about it), The Velvet Underground made the most important record of the year. No peace, love and hippies here.
