Please watch this.

The Senate killed a bill to ban state regulation of AI by a vote of 99-1 this spring. Now the industry - eager to stay unregulated - and Trump are scheming to shove the provision in the national defense bill.

You need to know this, so you can help stop it.

I suggest looking at using "ashamed" instead. Think of the power of a parent, spouse, coach, boss or friend saying "I'm ashamed of you" ― not "YOU should be ashamed" (i.e. feel shame for your actions), but "I am ashamed of YOU."

Everyone associated with Trump in any way should hear this hourly. /1
We need another word for morally serious people than shame. If you’re doing virtually everything in your power to get your government to change course (which @benjaminwittes.bluesky.social is doing) you are still subject to that state but not complicit in its actions.
@benjaminwittes.lawfaremedia.org discusses the shame he feels about current American foreign policy, specifically on the "peace deal" the Trump administration is currently trying to impose upon Ukraine, in The Situation.

Americans are now learning that greedy foreign online voices are masquerading as angry domestic political ones…

…and we in Canada need to watch for not only that, but also inflamatory "Canadian" accounts who are actually Americans, including covert U.S. gov't actors, seeking to sow division here.
This is a hugely important story. I wrote about its consequences already in "Road to Unfreedom" and we know much more now. If we want to be a democracy we have to create structures of factuality rather than selling our future to the loudest yeller in another country.
Although the scale of this is still to be assessed, this is the inevitable outcome of the monetization of the algorithm. Rage-bait becomes a personal revenue model. Nothing about this should be a surprise.

' “Sudden stratospheric warming gets everybody the most excited,” Cohen said. “It can have a big impact...”

So which one is this?

The jury is still out, he said...'

In 2014, the term “polar vortex” burst on the scene across Canada and the U.S. as temperatures plunged. In some places, it was colder than it was on Mars. Well, get ready to hear more about it.

Two of my favourite spots in Paris: the Place des Vosges, and Hugo's little corner of it. This is a colourful read, though paywalled (you can put the link into archive.today).

It tells of the makeshift stand-up writing desk he devised at his Guernsey home, but he also had a grander one in Paris… /1

Came across this by chance today in the account of someone who'd reposted someone reposting it ― and am glad I did.

I'm not sure if I've read it before, but I look forward to stumbling across it and reading it again, even if I'm also not sure then if it's for the first time. Little gifts.

Q: "What is your greatest fear?"

A: "Being known. By anyone — the public. That stems from being in residential school. We were hushed. We had no voice. They tried to kill the voice in me. So my mentality at that time was, it’s best that I’m invisible. I had to find my voice."
