@wansteadweather.bsky.social @metjam.co.uk interesting plots. Not sure how the interpolation algorithm works for rainfall! Doesn’t work for sunshine. Way too much!

The latest synoptic situation reminded me about December 1978 and the battle between Atlantic and a Scandi High. For 10 days at least occluded fronts lined up across England and eventually on the 30th of December the Beast was unleashed. H/T DWR Met Office (1/2)

Thanks so much! Really appreciate you following along. 850hPa is definitely the sweet spot for tracking these patterns - nice to connect with someone who knows their way around the models! And I love the word salad quality control approach - please do call out anything that doesn't make sense.

Halfway through meteorological Winter. Some rain, a fair amount of sunshine, frost, and wind at times. Rather typical so far. Not complaining. How is it for you?

No real change to this at the minute - models are clueless
The agreement of deep cold east of Scandinavia is fairly remarkable on the ECM AI mean, although the main uncertainty is around this mid-Atlantic trough that models seem to be playing catch-up with a bit and have been doing so over the last few weeks.

There’s the three. Snow in January on a Calderdale little farm. Lots went wrong but lots went right and I’m happy. That’s all the snow pics now until it returns.

Some 2.5mm of rain overnight brought the January total to 32mm, already 60% of the month average. However, 50 days on from when I last looked and the rolling 12-month total has increased just 1%!
But a look at past 10 years would suggest we're about to enter a very wet cycle.

Cold enough for a flurry or more likely snow grains this morning on Streatham Hill. They won't settle. One to wrap up if you're out. At least the wind is getting lighter so not bitterly cold.

Maybe February. As Snowbies weep into their beer over the lack of any convincing sign of Easterlies or even another Northerly outbreak, take solace in the fact that we need the rain. Atlantic lows will help restore the balance. #rainfall

I was keeping an eye on windspeeds at one weather station on the Scilly Islands and it had a gust from the West of 70mph about 17:15 then it must have lost power as there is no data after that. Anyone in the Scilly Isles - are you safe? #StormGoretti

All eyes on ECMWF today as it brings a Beast as early as next week. Never mind the Scandi High hasn't formed yet. All the other models bring Atlantic influence to our shores for the forseeable future. All the excitement is, I believe, a strong case of Confirmation Bias. 😉

I can usually detect when I'm worried subconsciously about the state of the World or more precisely the supply chain. I find myself stocking up on tins of soup and pulses. Mind you, I was a bit lavish with Baxter's Cullen Skink. At £3.95 a tin it's not exactly emergency rations!

There'll be several attempts at incursions of less cold air from the west/Atlantic in the days ahead

This could bring some disruptive snow/rain/wind in the process ... but with uncertainty in the details..

A covering of snow for many Home Counties this morning. Once the cloud cleared Southeastwards after 04:00, temperatures fell quickly North of London over snow and a severe frost has developed. You'll need extra time to defrost your car out in the morning. 🥶 Londoners, we missed out again!

#uksnow SW16 1/10 blink and you'll miss the odd snowflake caught in the streetlight. You might notice some different shaped ice crystals on your car roof in the morning! Not even a dusting.
