Easterly airstream becoming established now

Drier, colder air seeping in

Even allowing for the upcoming colder weather to see out the year, 2025 is on course to be amongst, if not the warmest year on record for the UK

Here the projected mean annual temperature relative to the top 5 on record..
December 23, 2025 at 1:30 PM
The chart below shows periods during 2025 where the mean temperature for the UK has been above average (orange) or below average (blue)

The orange/periods of warmer than average weather, clearly dominating...

As we approach year end, 2025 is on track to be one of the UK’s warmest years on record, joining 2022 and 2023 in the top three warmest years...

2025: likely another record year for UK annual temperature

That's one 'high high pressure' 1048hpa

The jetstream taking a holiday for the festive season, generally keeping rain bearing frontal weather systems at bay
December 22, 2025 at 10:01 PM
A perfect example coming up showing why in winter especially 850hpa/5000ft temperatures (a representation of the overall 'airmass') aren't that useful in predicting surface values..the 850s indicating a notable rebound after Xmas day, while the 'undercutting' air remains cooler
December 22, 2025 at 9:44 PM
That's a pretty intense area of high pressure becoming established by the end of the week

1046hpa, with its influence being felt through the troposphere

Dry, settled weather will take some budging
December 21, 2025 at 9:06 PM
Right, that's the #wintersolstice reached..

Now all roads point towards summer 🥳😅

#Christmas looks largely dry but chilly thanks to high pressure drawing air in from the E

The surface pressure chart looking benign but just need to keep eye on that little blue circle..lower pressure/a cold pool aloft moving SW nearby- could help generate a few wintry flurries
December 21, 2025 at 2:33 PM
The #wintersolstice has arrived
3.03pm today UK time

The shortest day of the year

Evenings already just starting to get lighter

Another 10 days or so before mornings start to get lighter though
Sunday is the Winter Solstice in the northern hemisphere. The point in the year when daylight is at its shortest

Across the UK, daylight will be in short supply:
Less than 8 hours in the far south 🕑
And under 6 hours in the far north 🕑
December 21, 2025 at 9:08 AM
Sub 528dam 1000-500hpa thickness air approaching from the east #ChristmasEve.. notably colder weather than we've become accustomed to incoming for #Christmas2025
December 20, 2025 at 1:23 PM
In the coming days pressure will begin to rise to the N & E of the UK

This will gradually cause Atlantic low pressure systems to slow down, weaken & start to retrogress in the vicinity of the UK

This will allow the high to become more dominant, with a colder E wind developing
December 19, 2025 at 7:36 PM
Winds set from a S to W direction drawing very mild air in across Europe this week

Winds set from a N to E direction drawing colder air in across Europe next week
December 18, 2025 at 10:35 PM
Up, up and away...difficult to believe that just a few weeks ago the spv stratospheric polar vortex was in tatters following a weak wind reversal..now expected to build back to above normal strength during the weeks ahead..

Incredibly wet just now
