Australia/New Zealand, what’s your problem?
The problem with questioning birthright citizenship in the US context should not be looked at with its economic peers, but its geographic. There’s a historical reason it exists and it underpins the entire state organization in the Western Hemisphere. There exceptions in the WH also tie into that:

Why quote nobodies with terrible opinions in the newspaper? You can always find someone with something terrible to say. Maybe try reporting on things that work to correct such evil viewpoints.
American society is so cooked.

It ought to be considered a sufficient crime to be impeached and removed by Congress for any Supreme Court Justice who votes to overturn such an unambiguous statement of the Constitution as the Birthright Citizenship Clause.
i think to understand the meaning of the birthright citizenship clause to the framers of the 14th amendment, you have to understand significance of dred scott to the civil war republican party. dred scott wasn't just a bad ruling, it was understood as a rejection of the declaration itself.

the birthright clause was not just written to wipe dred scott off of the books, it was written to repudiate the *idea* behind dred scott, you might say the larger *ideological project* of dred scott. and the whole of section 1 of the 14th amendment is a constitutional statement of political equality

this is an absurd, staggering amount of money to lose and the thing is that it basically didn’t matter at all because Meta prints money

the AI bubble is not going to completely destroy tech because many of the people funding it are sitting on gigantic money spigots and can go “oops”
Mark Zuckerberg’s gamble on the "Metaverse" has lost his company more than $77 billion.

One of the biggest drivers of high housing costs is that a small, highly motivated group of incumbent homeowners block new housing in their neighborhoods and almost no one is organized to push back.

Young people bear the brunt of that imbalance.

Be a housing fan.

I am happy to pay $30 a year for USPS Prime, which delivers mail daily to my home
The USPS posting a NINE BILLION DOLLAR LOSS!!! sounds terrible. Certainly worse than if you said "USPS costs thirty dollars per person per year" even though that means the same thing and more accurately describes a government service

I think Democrats should offer voters a broadly defined anti-fraud platform. Yes, obviously, start with Trump’s influence peddling, but don’t stop there. Online fraud is massive, almost every phone call you get is a scam, and the solution has to be federal or it just won’t work.

"the USPS is a miracle. it's in the constitution. for the price of a single stamp you can send a letter across the country, from Hawaii to Maine. Trump is trying to take that away from you. He's attacking Christmas cards and wedding invitations. It's un-American and it has to stop."

If this goes thru it will accelerate Hollywood’s precipitous decline. Thousands laid off. Creatives w/fewer studios willing to bid on projects. Fewer choices of what to watch for consumers. Possibly a death blow for theatrical filmgoing. Just terrible news all around

95% of MN Somalis are US citizens. 58% were born in the US. The only reason to target this community with immigration agents is for the sake of racial profiling and harassment - which the US supreme court says is legal now.

Attacking pre-school teachers because they don’t think Palestinian kids should be bombed to death? Declaring NYC’s first Muslim mayor “our enemy?” Fomenting hatred, even within the Jewish community?

You’re not making anyone safer.🧵

Let’s hope they do! All school lunches should be free!
“What if rich kids take advantage of free school lunches?” is like asking “What if rich executives take advantage of public transportation?”

What if they do?

They probably won’t. But what if they do?

Well, nothing.

An entire room full of powerful old white people smiling and laughing as the president dehumanizes black immigrants and the first black president.

Just fucking pathetic.
Trump, continued: "What the Somalian people have done to Minnesota is not even believable. It’s not even believable. And a lot of it starts with the governor. A lot of it starts with Barack HUSSEIN Obama, because that’s when people started coming in... They want to kiss our country good night."

No, you *don’t* gotta hand it to him, actually.
Jeffries: "The border is secure. That's a good thing. It happened on his watch. He wants to claim credit for it, of course he'll get credit for that. In terms of making sure that we actually deal with the issues that matter, including on immigration, there's a lot that's left to be desired."

Also, the Interstate Highway System as it was implemented in US cities is not what I’d consider a great model for how to get urban development projects done in a fair and effective manner.
Lesson one: Yes, you can do a lot of things if you break the law.
Lesson two: Doing something is not the same as doing a good thing - it is harder to build than it is to destroy.
Trump has built nothing like the TVA. His lawbreaking is not "freeing the stuck wheels of bureaucracy."

Drives me nuts to hear centrists praise Trump‘s “effectiveness”. Destruction of USAID and university research is not effectiveness. Arresting and deporting legal immigrants and deploying armed thugs to harass people based on their race is not an “effective” immigration policy.

As someone with ADHD, I’m uncomfortable with some of these accommodations. Not everyone knows they have ADHD (I didn’t). Extended/quiet time would help *everyone*. But also, the workplace won’t be giving us any such.

But it’s no “crisis” compared to what else is going on in higher ed these days.
So a real dirty (non)secret about the adhd accommodations panic is that it is an issue almost entirely due to shitty teachers being shitty. I never got mad about the "help" my students needed because I *WANTED* them to succeed! Also, we should make most accommodations just accepted best practices!

This is truly the best of what America can be and often is. I can’t fathom not feeling proud of what we’ve built here, and I’m endlessly gutted by the hateful bigots who are trying to tear it all down.
Anyway the best I've ever felt about America was me (Jewish) standing in line with my friend and her daughter (Irish and Latina) to pet a baby lamb at the Minnesota State Fair alongside a hijabi Black woman and her daughter, an East Asian family, an African-American family, and some white people.
