I quit the former Twitter two years ago this week, and I am here to tell you that my online life got a lot better for having left it. In two years I've not been tempted to go back, and I haven't felt any penalty in either career or community for not being there. It's nice to be here and not there.

This was the plan all along and why people like Thiel have inserted their cronies into key positions in the govt. They HATE the FDA and have for many years because they want to make drugs (mostly longevity ones) that don’t have to go through serious vetting. Here is the inevitable outcome:
FDA is approving a new form of nalmefene for “prophylaxis” for “opioid exposure,” specifically citing fentanyl.

“Fentanyl exposure” is not a thing. Fent has to be intentionally ingested to cause OD.

It’s being made by a “blockchain-focused digital finance company” whose “biotech arm” is only this…

It's been a while since I posted my art, so here's one of my K-T impact related works, 'Land and sea'. Before I was into space I was into Dinosaurs and I have done several prehistoric life paintings over the years.
Here the giant impact blasts land and ocean areas, upending the regional scenery.

General relativity was an extraordinary proposal that required extraordinary evidence if it was to be taken seriously. So explaining the anomalous precession of Mercury –– one of the three "classical" tests of general relativity proposed by Einstein –– was a major accomplishment. (7/n)

Le Verrier hypothesized that it might be due to an undiscovered planet, dubbed "Vulcan," that orbited even closer to the Sun than Mercury.

This is the subject of @tomlevenson.bsky.social's book "The Hunt for Vulcan." (6/n)
The Hunt for Vulcan
A dramatic human story of Newton, Einstein, and others' epic quest, Tom Levenson's The Hunt for Vulcan offers insight into how science really advances.

The anomalous behavior of Mercury had been puzzling scientists since it was first identified by Urbain Le Verrier (who also predicted the location of Neptune) in 1859.

Mercury's motion deviated from the predictions of Newtonian gravity in a small but measurable way. (5/n)

It would be another four years before the deflection of light by the sun's gravitational field was observed.

Here is a thread from last year, talking about the 1919 eclipse expeditions that confirmed Einstein's prediction. (4/n)
Deflection of starlight by the Sun’s gravitational field, measured during a solar eclipse and confirming a central prediction of Einstein's general relativity, was announced at a joint meeting of the Royal Society and the Royal Astronomical Society #OTD in 1919. 🧪 🔭

In earlier calculations, Einstein had applied the equivalence principle to Newtonian gravity and found just a 0.85 arc-second deflection – exactly half of the actual value. (3/n)

Einstein also points out that his previous result on deflection of light by a gravitational field wasn't quite right!

With general relativity almost in its final form, he finds that a light ray just grazing the sun is shifted from its original path by 1.7 arc-seconds. (2/n)

Einstein presented "Explanation of the Perihelion Motion of Mercury from the General Theory of Relativity" #OTD in 1915.

He used his nearly-complete theory of general relativity to explain the 43 arc-second per century anomalous precession of Mercury. 🧪 ⚛️ 🔭
