Further, Steinbrenner cited a $100 million payment the Yankees on bonds issued by New York City for Yankee Stadium. Steinbrenner complained that the Yankees have to make payments on these bonds every year, including in 2020, when the season was shortened due to COVID-19. OK, but: Anybody who owed money to anybody had to make payments in 2020. Credit card debt, mortgages, car payments, you name it. Having to pay your creditors is not a uniquely Yankees thing. In 2020, the indebtedness was refinanced at a much lower rate, saving the Yankees millions of dollars per year. The bonds are called “PILOT” bonds, for Payments In Lieu Of Taxes. According to this report from Sports Business Journal, the Yankees in 2024 made bond payments of $84 million (OK, fine, Hal, that rounds up to $100 million) and received tax exemptions of $122 million. That yielded a $38 million net benefit. The interest payments on the bonds are included in Forbes’ estimates (principal payments aren’t), which incorporate stadium-related interest.
