I wrote something about the DCC discourse in which I:
- Summarise the story so far
- Attempt to synthesise two contrary module styles
- Praise @zedecksiew.bsky.social
with a small cameo from my Oma's Nasi Goering

Doing Both
How do we write a module to be both a reference document and good prose?

This Questing Beast video really is the gift that keeps on giving for good blog posts.
Quick response to @orthopraxy.bsky.social's excellent "Eating the Book--a response to 'We Need to Talk About Goodman Games'" to test my extremely cool new URL:

A good GM should embrace their inner super-villain
Today's Esoteric RPG Take: Narrative difficulty is more interesting than mathematically difficulty. A greater consequence is more fun than a higher target number.

It's the difference between "You can try, but the target number is 20" and "You can try, but if you fail everyone you know will die."

The author is on here! Good post, more please.
New Blog Post: Eating the Book--a response to 'We Need to Talk About Goodman Games.'

Wherein I critique that Questing Beast Video, articulate different approaches to game preparation, and advocate for more intellectually curious criticism in the RPG space.

This is the kind of post that gets you added to my RSS reader. Intelligent, thought provoking and a little contrarian. Good stuff.

Great deal for adventure writters and I can only assume that those hired to finish these books with art, layout and editting will also do quite well.
Next month I will launch Cairn Press.
I tried to make a publishing agreement that is fair, free, and mutually beneficial. Once the lawyer approves final contract I'll release it as CC-BY-SA, if possible. I've also written up a "plain English" version that you can read here:

People who say theatre is dead clearly haven't seen my wife's production of "Spidey helps Mater go potty". Riveting stuff.

River dice! Not just for depth crawls. Honestly I should have realised this sooner.

It's at times like this I would urge people to learn to use XMPP. It's federated (like email), encrypted, and does all the stuff you'd need from Discord. It's just a little more effort.
Discord has confidentially filed for an IPO, according to Bloomberg.

If any experienced OSR writers need a pet freak to do odd jobs for them, I am available. Skills include
- Literacy
- Computers (no I will not elaborate)
- Talking funny sometimes (and that is a matter of taste)
All I ask in exchange is help not sucking.

I think the theme of this year in terms of writing will be quantity. As much output as I can possibly manage so I can learn be hopefully reach something great. Getting the words to flow like water. If we can't manage water, then partially treated sewerage. I'm not picky.

🚨THE BLOGGIES ARE BACK🚨

To my mind, the most important awards in tabletop roleplaying games, as it is entirely community-run / -driven; and is really about recognising creators participating in the community, being in conversation with other creators, etc

Go submit your blog posts now!
The Bloggies 2026 submissions are now open!

Submit your favorite posts, series, and debut blogs via the official Bloggies page between now and Jan 31st!

Please share this around. I'll be making regular Bloggies-themed announcements throughout the month.

My Orbital Blues module is going to be set on a Mars Colony where alcohol is illegal because
A) Good historical allusions
B) People have way more complicated feelings about alcohol compared to other drugs, so hopefully the whole thing is a lot more morally treacherous.

New year means new projects. Starting with a Orbital Blues module, just need to figure out how to handle a city. I'm sure there's already a bunch of good blog posts I just can't find.

This should be the standard for anything creative that relies on contract work. TRPG art sells the damn book.
In Tabletop Roleplaying Games the idea of royalties is still relatively new; more of us at the publishing level need to be thinking about ways to undermine the existing paradigm and build to sustain our comrades and collaborators in the long term and give them the fruits of their own labor
My wife had a single line in Kung Fu Panda 17 years ago and still gets checks every few months. Most are way smaller than this, but devs get $0 even though the games we work on will likely be sold for 10+ years soooo yeah.

Mythic Bastionland is just so damn good. Ran a one-shot style session, and already my players want a campaign! And that was with the initial awkward fumbling at the start as they got used to the freedom of the system. Will have to write up a play report tonight.
